Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Key Terms

held-to-maturity, available-for-sale, amortized cost basis, common equity tier 1
4 terms
held-to-maturity financial
"held-to-maturity securities were reclassified to available-for-sale designation"
A held-to-maturity asset is a debt investment a company plans and is able to keep until the loan or bond reaches its scheduled end, when the principal is repaid. For investors, this classification matters because the holder treats the investment like a locked-in loan—avoiding short-term price swings in financial statements and signaling a steady income expectation, similar to lending money to a friend with a fixed repayment date.
available-for-sale financial
"reclassified to available-for-sale designation"
A classification for bonds, stocks or other investments that a company plans to keep but might sell before they reach full term. Think of it like items a shop keeps on a shelf for potential sale: their market value can go up or down while the company holds them, and those unrealized gains or losses are shown separately from operating profit until they are sold. Investors watch this because large swings can change a company’s reported net worth and signal how much flexibility it has to raise cash quickly.
amortized cost basis financial
"long-dated, low yielding securities with an amortized cost basis of $2.5 billion"
The purchase price of a debt instrument (or similar financial asset) adjusted over time for the systematic recognition of any premium or discount and for principal repayments, producing the carrying value used on financial statements. Amortized cost basis is typically calculated by spreading the difference between purchase price and maturity value across the life of the instrument (commonly using the effective interest method), so the basis moves toward par at maturity; it does not reflect current market price or unrealized gains and losses recognized under fair-value accounting. Accounting and tax regimes can require different amortization methods, so the exact calculation may vary depending on the applicable standard or tax rule.
common equity tier 1 financial
"preliminary Common Equity Tier 1 of 13.0%"
Common Equity Tier 1 is the highest-quality capital a bank holds—mainly common shares and retained profits—that acts as the primary cushion against losses. Investors use the CET1 level and ratio to judge a bank’s financial strength and regulatory standing: a bigger cushion means the bank is better able to absorb shocks, sustain payouts and borrow cheaply, much like an emergency fund for a household.

Third Quarter Results Reflect Execution of Significant Strategic Initiatives, Strong Core Loan Growth, and Robust Deposit Growth

GREENVILLE, S.C., Oct. 20, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- United Community Banks, Inc. (NYSE: UCB) (United) today announced financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, which included 9.8% annualized core loan growth, 8.0% annualized core customer deposit growth, and a stable margin following six consecutive quarters of margin expansion.

Chairman and CEO Lynn Harton stated, “Our third quarter results reflect key strategic actions that simplify our balance sheet, reduce risk, and strengthen future operating performance. We completed the acquisition of Peach State Bank on August 1, the sale of our Navitas equipment finance business on September 1, and the restructuring of our investment portfolio in early September. The restructuring shortened duration and significantly improved the yield on our portfolio. At the same time, we achieved high single-digit growth in both core loans and customer deposits in the quarter, reflecting strong momentum resulting from our investment in hiring top talent. New loan production exceeded $1 billion for the second consecutive quarter. The strategies executed in the third quarter position us very well for the future, as demonstrated by improvements in operating return on assets, return on tangible common equity, and operating efficiency ratio.”

In the third quarter, United sold its Navitas equipment finance business for $2.0 billion in cash proceeds, a 7% premium to par. Following the sale, $2.2 billion in held-to-maturity securities were reclassified to available-for-sale designation and long-dated, low yielding securities with an amortized cost basis of $2.5 billion were subsequently sold. The securities repositioning resulted in $2.1 billion of cash proceeds, which, together with the $2.0 billion of Navitas sale proceeds, were redeployed into higher-yielding securities and used to pay down borrowings. Additionally, United completed the acquisition of Peach State Bancshares in the third quarter, increasing density in a dynamic growth market through a complementary, low-risk transaction.

Harton continued, “The actions completed in the third quarter allow us to focus on growing the core banking business within our outstanding Southeast footprint. We believe these actions, including our strong liquidity and capital, position us well for long-term success.”

(1) Interest revenue on tax-exempt securities and loans includes a taxable-equivalent adjustment to reflect comparable interest on taxable securities and loans. The FTE adjustment totaled $1.32 million and $1.04 million, respectively, for the three months ended September 30, 2026 and 2025. The tax rate used to calculate the adjustment was 25%, reflecting the statutory federal income tax rate and the federal tax adjusted state income tax rate.
(2) Included in the average balance of loans outstanding are loans on which the accrual of interest has been discontinued.
(3) Unrealized gains and losses on AFS securities, including those related to the transfer from AFS to HTM have been reclassified to other assets. Pretax unrealized losses of $207 million in 2026 and $223 million in 2025 are included in other assets for purposes of this presentation.
(4) Net interest margin is taxable equivalent net interest revenue divided by average interest-earning assets.
