scope 3 regulatory
Scope 3 describes all greenhouse gas emissions that occur upstream and downstream of a company’s direct operations—things like emissions from suppliers, transportation, product use, and disposal. Think of it as the hidden carbon footprint tied to everything a business buys, sells, or enables; it matters to investors because these indirect emissions can drive regulatory costs, supply-chain disruption, consumer preference shifts, and long-term valuation risk that aren’t visible on a company’s factory floor or utility bill.
corporate sustainability reporting directive (csrd) regulatory
A regulatory rule that requires large companies to publish standardized, audited information about their environmental, social and governance performance alongside financial results. Think of it as adding a nutritional label for a company’s sustainability impacts and risks so investors can compare firms, spot hidden risks or opportunities, and hold management accountable when making investment decisions.
product carbon footprint technical
A product carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions linked to a product across its whole lifespan—from raw materials and manufacturing to transport, use and disposal—usually shown as a single carbon dioxide-equivalent number. Investors care because this “carbon score” helps reveal hidden costs, regulatory or reputational risks, and demand trends: lower footprints can mean lower future expenses, easier access to green markets, and a more resilient long-term investment.
carbon accounting technical
Carbon accounting is the process of measuring and tracking the greenhouse gas emissions a business produces, often broken down by direct operations, purchased energy, and supply-chain activities. Like keeping financial books for pollution, it helps investors see hidden liabilities, future compliance costs, and whether a company is meeting public climate promises—information that affects valuation, risk assessments, and long-term returns.
ai-powered technical
"AI-powered" describes technology that uses artificial intelligence to perform tasks, make decisions, or analyze information automatically. It’s similar to having a highly skilled assistant that can learn from data, recognize patterns, and improve over time, helping to make processes faster and more accurate. For investors, this means better insights and more efficient operations, potentially leading to smarter investment choices.

NORTHBROOK, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UL Solutions Inc. (NYSE: ULS), a global leader in applied safety science, today announced the launch of an AI-powered ULTRUS UL 360 software capability designed to help organizations calculate product carbon footprints and improve the quality of supplier emissions data used in carbon accounting and reporting.

UL Solutions announced the launch of an AI-powered ULTRUS UL 360 software capability designed to help organizations calculate product carbon footprints and improve the quality of supplier emissions data used in carbon accounting and reporting.

“Companies are being asked for product-level carbon information more often, and Scope 3 supplier data can be one of the biggest bottlenecks,” said John Genovesi, executive vice president and president of Risk and Compliance Software at UL Solutions. “Our new AI-powered ULTRUS UL 360 software capability is designed to make it easier to gather supplier emissions data and turn it into product carbon footprints teams can use with more confidence.”

As product carbon footprint requests rise across global supply chains, many organizations still depend on manual spreadsheets and one-off supplier questionnaires, making it hard to generate consistent, updatable results across products. ULTRUS UL 360 streamlines this process by centralizing supplier data and enabling sustainability, procurement, and product teams to produce consistent, comparable product-level carbon footprints across an entire portfolio over time.

The launch comes as companies face growing pressure to measure and disclose Scope 3 emissions associated with their products and supply chains. In Europe, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) expands climate reporting expectations and is pushing companies to collect Scope 3 data — emissions that occur outside a company’s direct operations, such as from suppliers and product use. In the U.S., California’s SB 253 requires large companies doing business in the state to report Scope 3 emissions. Together with investor scrutiny and emerging global standards like the ISSB climate framework, these rules are accelerating demand for consistent, decision-ready product carbon footprint data across complex supply chains.

“New disclosure rules are raising the bar for Scope 3 data quality,” said Simin Zhou, vice president and general manager of Software at UL Solutions. “But many organizations still struggle not only to collect supplier emissions data, but to use it consistently. Our AI-powered software brings structure to supplier inputs, turning them into consistent, audit-ready product carbon footprints companies can use for Scope 3 reporting and decisions.”
