Key Terms

distributed energy resources technical
Small, local sources and devices that generate, store or manage electricity near where it’s used—examples include rooftop solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, smart thermostats and backup generators. They matter to investors because they reshape how power is produced, sold and paid for: they can lower costs, create new revenue streams, change regulation and require grid upgrades, so they affect company profits, risk profiles and growth opportunities much like dozens of small engines changing how a single factory runs.
solar pv systems technical
Solar PV systems use panels made of semiconductor cells to turn sunlight into electricity that can power buildings or feed the grid; they include the panels, mounting, wiring and often inverters or batteries to make the power usable. Investors care because these systems produce long-lived, low-cost energy that can reduce operating expenses, create predictable revenue or savings, and are affected by government incentives, technology shifts and maintenance costs.
battery energy storage system technical
A battery energy storage system is a device that stores electricity for later use, much like a rechargeable battery for a phone or laptop. It allows energy generated during times of low demand or from renewable sources to be saved and released when needed, helping to balance supply and demand. For investors, it represents a way to support reliable energy flow and capitalize on the increasing demand for flexible, clean power solutions.
ev charging stations technical
Electric vehicle charging stations are sites or devices that replenish a car’s battery by delivering electricity, ranging from slow home chargers to high-speed public units at parking lots or roadside hubs. Investors care because charging networks act like the gas stations of the electric era: their availability and pricing influence how quickly people switch to electric cars, create steady customer fees, affect electricity demand, and open opportunities across utilities, real estate and transportation businesses.
microgrid technical
A microgrid is a small, local electricity system that combines power sources (like solar panels, small generators) and storage (batteries) with controls so it can run either connected to the main utility grid or on its own during outages. For investors, microgrids matter because they reduce outage risk, can lower energy costs, enable new revenue streams (selling excess power or grid services), and reflect growing demand for resilient, decentralized energy infrastructure.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Willdan Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: WLDN) announced today that it was selected by Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in California to implement a $49 million energy services contract. The scope of work consists of the turnkey delivery of distributed energy resources (DERs) and infrastructure upgrades, including solar PV systems, a battery energy storage system, EV charging stations, and a comprehensive parking lot redesign. Construction is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2027.

Willdan is listed as a qualified energy service company in the state of California and holds a Master Services Agreement with the Foundation for California Community Colleges to implement DERs at California Community Colleges – including Mt. SAC – as well as other public sector facilities.

“Sustainability is central to our mission and vision, guiding our students and staff while ensuring our campus can serve the community reliably for years to come,” said Dr. Robert Hidalgo, Mt. SAC President of the Board of Trustees. “This project reflects those values by reducing energy use, adding resiliency through local energy generation and storage, and providing the flexibility to support a future microgrid and campus electrification.”
