XTI's selection of key drivetrain suppliers marks significant technical progress for their TriFan 600 aircraft, enhancing project credibility.
XTI Aerospace has achieved a critical development milestone by selecting three respected aerospace suppliers for the TriFan 600's drivetrain system. This partnership with Triumph Geared Solutions (gearboxes), Formsprag Clutch (clutch systems), and Kamatics Corporation (precision shafts) represents significant technical progress toward realizing their xVTOL aircraft concept.
The selection addresses one of the most challenging aspects of xVTOL development - creating a reliable, efficient power distribution system that can handle both vertical and forward flight operations. The two-day engineering summit mentioned suggests detailed technical collaboration has begun, focusing on crucial elements like fault tolerance, thermal management, and weight optimization.
From an engineering perspective, this milestone is particularly significant because the drivetrain represents a complex integration challenge for any xVTOL platform. The system must distribute power from twin turboshaft engines to three ducted fans while managing the transition between hover and forward flight - all with aerospace-grade reliability and maintainability.
Partnering with established aerospace suppliers rather than attempting in-house development demonstrates a pragmatic approach to aircraft development. These suppliers bring specialized expertise and proven manufacturing capabilities that significantly de-risk this critical subsystem. Triumph's experience with high-performance gearboxes, Formsprag's clutch technology, and Kamatics' precision driveshafts are all essential for the novel power distribution requirements of the TriFan 600.
While definitive agreements are still forthcoming, this announcement suggests XTI is maintaining its development timeline and making tangible progress on their innovative aircraft design.
Selection advances the TriFan 600 xVTOL airplane's development and meets a key product and engineering Q2 milestone
Announcement of the drivetrain suppliers meets a key Q2 2025 product and engineering milestone announced in a prior press release. Execution of definitive agreements between the parties is forthcoming.
Under the planned teaming arrangement:
- Triumph Geared Solutions will design, develop, and manufacture the primary and secondary gearboxes that manage power distribution across the TriFan's propulsion system.
- Formsprag Clutch will design, develop and manufacture the clutch systems within the TriFan's drivetrain.
- Kamatics Corporation will design and manufacture the precision shafts that ultimately connect the twin turboshaft engines to the TriFan's three ducted fans.
XTI, Triumph Geared Solutions, Kamatics, and Formsprag Clutch recently held a collaborative two-day summit bringing together top engineers, executives, and technical specialists to accelerate progress on the high-performance drivetrain solution for the TriFan 600 xVTOL aircraft. The companies discussed fault tolerant drivetrain configurations, thermal management and lubrication systems, advanced materials and lightweight design, and system integration for maintainability as well as aligned on key design principles, integration milestones, and validation protocols for the drivetrain architecture.
"Partnering with these suppliers is more than a technical collaboration — it's about shaping the future of flight," said Scott Pomeroy, Chairman and CEO of XTI Aerospace. "The collective expertise and shared vision represent the foundation of an aircraft drivetrain system that we believe will redefine what's possible."
Pete Gibson, President of Triumph Geared Solutions, shared, "We look forward to contributing our expertise in high-performance aerospace gearboxes to XTI's next-generation aircraft. This partnership reflects Triumph's ongoing commitment to advancing future-forward aviation technologies."
Laurent Crosnier, VP and General Manager of Regal Rexnord's Clutches & Brakes business added, "Formsprag Clutch is excited to be an integral part of XTI's transformational VTOL aircraft. Creating a highly reliable and innovative drivetrain solution is a critical subsystem, and we look forward to this challenge."
Kevin Ladouceur, General Manager of Kamatics Corporation, stated, "KAMATICS is honored to be selected by XTI for its pioneering aircraft. Our customized driveshaft technologies are well-suited to meet the demanding performance and durability requirements of the TriFan 600's propulsion system."
The TriFan 600 is designed to combine the speed, range, and comfort of a business airplane with the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter. The aircraft's twin turboshaft propulsion system and pivoting ducted fans will allow for vertical lift, efficient forward flight, and smooth transitions in between — offering unprecedented flexibility and performance in regional air mobility.
