Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Filing Explained

Abbott’s forward adjusted earnings-per-share outlook has no matching GAAP forecast because it says some future expense effects cannot be predicted reliably.

This Form 8-K furnishes Abbott’s third-quarter results release; its first-nine-month reconciliation includes legal-resolution expenses among specified items excluded from adjusted earnings, while the GAAP results include those items. The listed nine-month “other” items include approximately $670 million related to agreements entered into to resolve the Gill case and NEC claims, and approximately $400 million, including attorneys’ fees and accrued interest, related to an agreement to resolve DOJ investigations and related litigation.

Abbott says the missing GAAP comparison for its forward adjusted earnings-per-share outlook reflects its inability to predict the timing and impact of specified items, including restructuring, intangible-asset impairments, acquisition-related expenses and foreign exchange, with reasonable certainty and without unreasonable effort.

comparable sales growth financial
"measuring sales growth on a comparable basis"
Comparable sales growth measures how much the sales from existing, similar parts of a business increase over a specific period, excluding new locations or products. It helps investors see how well a company's core operations are performing without the influence of expansion or changes in its structure. This metric provides a clearer picture of consistent, ongoing demand for the company's offerings.
specified items financial
"Net Earnings excluding Specified Items"
adjusted diluted earnings per share financial
"full-year 2026 adjusted diluted earnings per share"
Adjusted diluted earnings per share is the company’s net profit per share after accounting for potential extra shares (from options or convertible securities) and removing one‑time or unusual items so the number reflects ongoing business results. Think of it like timing a runner’s steady pace after excluding a few unexpected stops; it gives investors a clearer view of sustainable profit available to each share. Investors use it to compare companies and judge underlying profitability and valuation without short‑term distortions.
foreign exchange financial
"excludes the impact of foreign exchange"
Foreign exchange is the process of swapping one country's money for another’s, like exchanging dollars for euros when traveling. It matters because it determines how much your money is worth in another country, affecting prices, investments, and international trade. This system helps businesses and governments buy and sell across borders smoothly.
net after-tax charges financial
"excludes net after-tax charges of $1.557 billion"
Net sales $13.013 billion +14.5%
GAAP net earnings $920 million -44.1%

Item 2.02    Results of Operations and Financial Condition
On October 21, 2026, Abbott Laboratories announced its results of operations for the third quarter 2026.
Furnished as Exhibit 99.1, and incorporated herein by reference, is the news release issued by Abbott announcing those results. In that news release, Abbott uses various non-GAAP financial measures including, among others, net earnings excluding specified items. These non-GAAP financial measures adjust for factors that are unusual or unpredictable, such as expenses primarily associated with acquisitions, legal settlements, stock-based compensation recognized as expense from equity awards accelerated in connection with an acquisition, restructuring actions, certain regulatory costs, adjustments related to prior recognition of a significant non-cash deferred tax benefit, tax benefits associated with specified items, net tax expense as a result of the resolution of various tax positions related to prior years, and excess tax benefits associated with share-based compensation. These non-GAAP financial measures also exclude intangible amortization expense to provide greater visibility on the results of operations excluding these costs, similar to how Abbott’s management internally assesses performance. Abbott’s management believes the presentation of these non-GAAP financial measures provides useful information to investors regarding Abbott’s results of operations as these non-GAAP financial measures allow investors to better evaluate ongoing business performance. Abbott’s management also uses these non-GAAP financial measures internally to monitor performance of the businesses. Abbott, however, cautions investors to consider these non-GAAP financial measures in addition to, and not as a substitute for, financial measures prepared in accordance with GAAP.

THIRD-QUARTER BUSINESS OVERVIEW

Comparable sales growth:
Management believes that measuring sales growth on a comparable basis is an appropriate way for investors to best understand the underlying performance of the business. Comparable sales growth includes the prior and current year sales of Exact Sciences, a cancer diagnostics company that Abbott acquired on March 23, 2026. Comparable sales growth excludes the impact of foreign exchange and revenue in both the prior and current year related to compensation payments that Abbott's Structural Heart business received as part of a multi-year agreement with a competitor. The final payment under this agreement was recognized in the first quarter of 2026.

Note: In order to compute results excluding the impact of exchange rates, current year U.S. dollar sales are multiplied or divided, as appropriate, by the current year average foreign exchange rates and then those amounts are multiplied or divided, as appropriate, by the prior year average foreign exchange rates.

Abbott's Financial Guidance
Abbott projects full-year 2026 comparable sales growth to be approximately 6.0%1.

Abbott projects full-year 2026 adjusted diluted earnings per share of $5.50 to $5.55.
