Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

Rhea-AI Filing Summary

Akzo Nobel N.V. reported Q3 2026 revenue of €2.538 billion versus €2.547 billion in Q3 2025; it described revenue as flat and comparable organic sales growth as 2%, driven by pricing. Adjusted EBITDA was €388 million, up 1% reported and 4% comparable from €385 million; its margin was 15.3% versus 15.1%, a sixth consecutive quarter of expansion.

Net cash from operating activities was €187 million, compared with €331 million a year earlier. Operating income was a loss of €73 million versus a loss of €29 million, with AkzoNobel citing Russia deconsolidation and the Pakistan divestment as impacts. The company signed binding agreements to sell Deco Paints South East Asia for $1.35 billion, at 21x FY25 EBITDA.

Based on current market visibility and prevailing trading conditions, and subject to ongoing market uncertainties, AkzoNobel expects around €100 million of adjusted EBITDA improvement in constant currencies and around €1.47 billion of adjusted EBITDA for full-year 2026. The latter is based on year-end 2025 exchange rates and adjusted for divestments of its liquid coatings businesses in Asia. The standalone outlook excludes the proposed Axalta merger, whose closing is expected in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Alternative Performance Measures (APMs) financial
"Organic growth metrics are Alternative Performance Measures (APMs)"
Alternative performance measures (APMs) are financial metrics companies present alongside standard accounting numbers that adjust or reframe reported results to highlight trends or aspects of performance management believes are more telling. Investors care because APMs can reveal cash flow, recurring earnings, or operational results that standard statements may obscure; like removing frosting from a cake to show its interior, they can clarify underlying performance but require scrutiny to ensure adjustments are sensible and consistent.
Adjusted EBITDA margin financial
"Adjusted EBITDA margin increased to 15.3%"
Adjusted EBITDA margin shows how much profit a company makes from its core operations, expressed as a percentage of its total revenue, after removing certain one-time or unusual expenses and income. It helps investors understand the company's true earning ability from regular business activities, making it easier to compare performance over time or with other companies. Think of it as measuring the efficiency of a business in turning sales into profits, excluding irregular adjustments.
deconsolidation financial
"deconsolidation of the Russian entities in 2026"
Deconsolidation occurs when a company stops combining another business’s financial results and balances with its own—usually because it no longer controls that business. For investors this matters because it can suddenly shrink reported revenue, assets, debt and profit, or create a one‑time gain or loss, changing how risky or profitable the remaining company appears; think of it like removing a roommate from a shared household budget and seeing your monthly totals change.
net debt/adjusted EBITDA financial
"leverage (net debt/adjusted EBITDA)"
A leverage ratio that compares a company’s net debt (total debt minus cash and equivalents) to its adjusted EBITDA, which is the company’s recurring operating cash earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization after removing one-time or unusual items. Think of it as how many years of normal operating earnings would be needed to pay off the company’s net debt; a lower number means less financial risk and generally better creditworthiness, which matters to investors assessing solvency, borrowing costs and valuation.
adjusted return on average invested capital financial
"adjusted return on average invested capital between 16% and 19%"

AkzoNobel delivers organic sales growth and a sixth consecutive quarter of margin expansion, reaches new milestone in value realization from its portfolio

Akzo Nobel N.V. (AKZA; AKZOY) publishes results for Q3 2026

Highlights Q3 2026 (compared with Q3 2025)

• Organic sales growth of +2% on pricing; revenue flat

• Operating income impacted by Russia deconsolidation and Pakistan divestment

• Organic adjusted EBITDA growth1 of €15 million

• Adjusted EBITDA margin increased to 15.3% (2025: 15.1%)

• Net cash from operating activities positive €187 million (2025: €331 million)

• Binding agreements signed to sell Deco Paints South East Asia for $1.35 billion, at 21x FY25 EBITDA

AkzoNobel CEO Greg Poux-Guillaume commented:

“AkzoNobel delivered another strong quarter, with organic sales and adjusted EBITDA both increasing.

Our sixth consecutive quarter of margin expansion confirms our ability to realize pricing in challenging markets and to deliver on our ambitious cost savings plan.

“We also announced the divestment of our Decorative Paints business in South East Asia, which successfully concludes the strategic review of our Paints portfolio in Asia. At an enterprise value of 21x FY25 EBITDA – more than twice our current trading multiple – it unlocks significant value, as did the previous sale of our liquid coatings businesses in India for 25x EBITDA. Meanwhile, our merger with Axalta is firmly on track, with regulatory approvals advancing and closing expected in early 2027.”

As a result, adjusted EBITDA for the full-year 2026 is expected to be around €1.47 billion, based on year-end 2025 exchange rates and adjusted for divestments of our liquid coatings businesses in Asia.

For the mid-term, AkzoNobel aims to expand profitability to deliver an adjusted EBITDA margin of above 16% and an adjusted return on average invested capital between 16% and 19%, underpinned by organic growth and industrial excellence.

The company expects leverage to be around 2 times net debt/adjusted EBITDA by the end of 2026. In the mid-term, AkzoNobel aims to maintain leverage around 2 times, while remaining committed to an investment grade credit rating.
