Rated power up to 80 kW FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine
Peak efficiency 57% FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine
Specified lifetime exceeding 25,000 operating hours FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine
Freeze-start operation down to −30°C FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine
Volumetric power density 57% increase Through integrated DC/DC packaging
Total part count 40% reduction FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine
Maximum radiator outlet temperature increases from 60°C to 75°C FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine
volumetric power density technical
"A 57% increase in volumetric power density"
Volumetric power density is the amount of electrical power a device can deliver per unit volume, usually expressed in watts per liter (W/L). It is measured by dividing the peak or sustained power output during discharge by the physical volume the device occupies; it is distinct from gravimetric power density (power per unit mass) and does not describe how much total energy the device can store or for how long it can sustain that power.
DC/DC converter technical
"An internal DC/DC converter and power controller"
A dc/dc converter is an electronic device that takes a direct-current (DC) input at one voltage and produces a regulated DC output at a different voltage. It usually does this by rapidly switching electronic components and storing energy in inductors or capacitors (a switching regulator), though simpler linear regulators also exist; converters can be non‑isolated (sharing the same ground) or isolated (providing electrical separation between input and output). Limitation: a dc/dc converter changes voltage and current but cannot create more power than the input provides (actual output power is reduced by conversion losses), and the choice of isolated vs. non‑isolated affects safety, noise, and cost tradeoffs.
regenerative braking technical
"stores energy recovered through regenerative braking"
Regenerative braking is a vehicle system that captures energy normally lost as heat when slowing down, converts it into electricity, and stores it in the vehicle’s battery. Think of it like a bicycle dynamo that charges a light while you brake; for investors, this means better fuel or battery efficiency, longer driving range, lower operating and maintenance costs, and potentially smaller batteries or improved vehicle performance—factors that affect vehicle economics and product competitiveness.
Energy-as-a-Service technical
"integrated Energy-as-a-Service solutions"
A business model where customers pay a provider for delivered energy services—such as electricity, heating, charging or efficiency improvements—instead of buying and running the equipment themselves. Like leasing a car with the manufacturer handling maintenance and fuel, the provider installs, operates and guarantees performance, creating predictable, subscription-style revenue for the provider and shifting upfront cost, maintenance and performance risk away from the customer, which investors watch for recurring income, contract stability and growth potential.

Ballard FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine makes series-production debut in next-generation Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen bus

New purpose-built hydrogen bus platform and transit fuel cell engine combine compact design, improved performance and tailored service support to lower lifecycle costs for public transit operators.

VANCOUVER, BC, Nov. 5, 2026 /CNW/ -- Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP) (TSX: BLDP) today announced that its FCmove®-SC fuel cell engine will make its series-production debut in the new-generation Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen transit bus. This milestone follows the extension of the companies' long-term supply agreement, broadens the scope of cooperation and reflects their continued commitment to advancing hydrogen bus technology.

Designed for city transit duty cycles, the FCmove®-SC combines efficient power generation with a compact architecture that simplifies vehicle integration and servicing when in operation. Its design draws on Ballard's extensive operating experience to help manufacturers and operators improve performance and reduce lifecycle costs.

"The FCmove®-SC's first integration into series production brings our latest fuel cell technology into Solaris's new bus platform designed around everyday operational needs," said Oben Uluc, Chief Revenue Officer, Ballard Power Systems. "For manufacturers, that means simpler integration and greater design flexibility. For operators, it means efficiency, serviceability and long-term value - making hydrogen buses an increasingly competitive option for zero-emission public transport."

A new vehicle architecture for hydrogen-powered transit

The new-generation Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen is built on the unified platform shared by the latest Urbino buses. Removing the conventional engine tower creates space for additional rear seating, while the flexible positioning of roof-mounted components improves service access.

The fuel cell serves as the bus's primary energy source, generating electricity for a centrally mounted traction motor. A supporting traction battery supplies additional power during peak demand and stores energy recovered through regenerative braking.

Fuel cell innovation focused on lifecycle value

The FCmove®-SC introduces several improvements for bus manufacturers and operators:

  • More power in a compact package: A 57% increase in volumetric power density through integrated DC/DC packaging.
  • Simpler vehicle integration: An internal DC/DC converter and power controller reduce external interfaces and consolidate functionality.
  • Improved thermal management: Maximum radiator outlet temperature increases from 60°C to 75°C, supporting reduced cooling requirements and greater use of waste heat for cabin heating.
  • Easier servicing: A 40% reduction in total part count simplifies the system and helps reduce maintenance requirements.
  • Enhanced safety: Revised internal stack-enclosure geometry provides passive protection against hydrogen-related risks.

The FCmove®-SC delivers up to 80kW of rated power and 57% peak efficiency, with a specified lifetime exceeding 25,000 operating hours. It also supports freeze-start operation down to −30°C and remote diagnostics to help identify maintenance needs.
