How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

"Net interest margin (tax-equivalent)"
Efficiency ratio financial
"Efficiency ratio"
A measure of how much a company spends to produce each dollar of revenue, usually shown as operating expenses divided by revenue and expressed as a percentage. Think of it as a household’s budget: a lower percentage means more of each dollar earned stays as profit, while a higher number means costs are eating into returns. Investors use it to judge cost control and compare how efficiently companies turn revenue into earnings, especially in banks and financial firms.
Allowance for credit losses financial
"Allowance for credit losses"
Allowance for credit losses is a reserve set aside by a financial institution to cover potential losses from borrowers who may not repay their loans. It acts like a safety net, helping the institution prepare for loans that might turn sour. For investors, it signals how cautious the institution is about the quality of its loans and potential risks to its financial health.
Nonperforming assets financial
"Nonperforming assets"
Nonperforming assets are loans or investments that are not generating expected payments or returns because the borrower has fallen behind on payments or the investment has lost value. They matter to investors because a high level of nonperforming assets can indicate financial trouble for a bank or institution, potentially affecting its stability and profitability.
Other real estate owned financial
"Other real estate owned"
Assets a lender or financial firm holds after taking back real property through foreclosure or repossession because a borrower defaulted. Think of it like a store keeping returned items it didn’t sell — these properties are not earning interest, can be costly to maintain, and may be sold at a loss or profit, so they directly affect a lender’s balance sheet, cash flow and perceived credit risk for investors.

First Nine Months of 2026 Financial Results and Declaration of Cash Dividend; Increases Quarterly Cash Dividend by 50%

Bank of the James Financial Group Reports First Nine Months 2026 Net Income of $9.34 Million,  $2.05 Per Share

LYNCHBURG, VA, October 30, 2026 -- Bank of the James Financial Group, Inc. (the “Company”) (NASDAQ: BOTJ), the parent company of Bank of the James (the “Bank”), a full-service commercial and retail bank, and Pettyjohn, Wood & White, Inc. (“PWW”), an SEC-registered investment advisor, today announced unaudited results of operations for the three-month and nine-month periods ended September 30, 2026. The Bank serves Region 2000 (the greater Lynchburg metropolitan statistical area) and the Blacksburg, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Nellysford, Roanoke, and Wytheville, Virginia markets.

Third Quarter 2026 and Year-to-Date 2026 Highlights

·

Net income for the third quarter of 2026 was $3.32 million, an increase of $570,000 from $2.75 million in the third quarter of 2025. Earnings per share were $0.73 compared with $0.61 per share one year earlier. Net income for the first nine months of 2026 was $9.34 million, an increase of $3.04 million from $6.30 million in the first nine months of 2025. Earnings per share were $2.05 compared with $1.39 per share one year earlier. The year-over-year increases reflect higher net interest income and growth in noninterest income.

·

Total assets were $1.065 billion at September 30, 2026, compared with $1.039 billion at December 31, 2025, and $1.020 billion at September 30, 2025.

·

Net interest income after provision for (recovery of) credit losses increased approximately 18% to $9.69 million in the third quarter of 2026 from $8.21 million in the third quarter of 2025, and increased 11.80% to $27.47 million in the first nine months of 2026 from $24.57 million in the first nine months of 2025. The Company recorded a  total provision for credit losses of $35,000 for the third quarter and $239,000 for the first nine months of 2026. The provision for credit losses on loans was  $26,000 and $344,000, respectively.

·

Net interest margin (tax-equivalent) was 3.81% for the third quarter of 2026 compared with 3.44% for the third quarter of 2025, and 3.70% for the first nine months of 2026 compared with 3.37% for the first nine months of 2025.

·

Interest expense decreased 8.90% to $3.16 million in the third quarter of 2026 from $3.47 million in the third quarter of 2025, and decreased 10.26% to $9.31 million in the first nine months of 2026 from $10.37 million in the first nine months of 2025, reflecting lower deposit costs and, for the nine-month comparison only, the retirement of approximately $10 million in capital notes in the second quarter of 2025.

1

·

Noninterest income increased 0.24% to $4.18 million in the third quarter of 2026 from $4.17 million in the third quarter of 2025, and increased 9.47% to $12.62 million in the first nine months of 2026 from $11.53 million in the first nine months of 2025.

·

Noninterest expense increased 5.85% to $9.70 million in the third quarter of 2026 from $9.16 million in the third quarter of 2025, and decreased 0.24% to $28.37 million in the first nine months of 2026 from $28.44 million in the first nine months of 2025.

·

Wealth management fees from PWW increased 10.43% to $1.50 million in the third quarter of 2026 from $1.36 million in the third quarter of 2025, and increased 11.90% to $4.38 million in the first nine months of 2026 from $3.92 million in the first nine months of 2025.

·

The efficiency ratio (noninterest expense divided by the sum of net interest income and noninterest income) improved to 69.76% in the third quarter of 2026 from 73.46% in the third  quarter of 2025, and to 70.35% in the first nine months of 2026 from 79.45% in the first nine months of 2025.

·

Loans, net of the allowance for credit losses, were $694.03 million at September 30, 2026, compared with $686.08 million at June 30, 2026, $661.36 million at December 31, 2025, and $653.29 million at September 30, 2025.

·

Total deposits were $963.60 million at September 30, 2026, compared with $937.13 million at December 31, 2025, and $919.80 million at September 30, 2025.

·

Nonperforming loans were $548,000 at September 30, 2026, down from $1.09 million at June 30, 2026, and from $1.70 million at December 31, 2025. The allowance for credit losses was $6.55 million at September 30, 2026, compared with $6.45 million at December 31, 2025, and represented 1,195.99% coverage of nonperforming loans, compared with 378.52% at December 31, 2025.    The decrease in nonperforming loans was due primarily to the return of selected non-accrual relationships to accrual status.

·

Stockholders’ equity decreased to $78.45 million at September 30, 2026, from $80.05 million at December 31, 2025, a decrease of 2.00%.  Book value per share decreased to $17.27 from $17.62.  Retained earnings increased $7.97 million, as year-to-date net income of $9.34 million was partially offset by dividends paid.  This was more than offset by a $9.57 million increase in accumulated other comprehensive loss (AOCI), net of tax, to $24.51 million from $14.94 million at December 31, 2025, reflecting unrealized losses on the Company’s available-for-sale securities portfolio resulting from the increase in market interest rates since December 31, 2025, particularly during the third quarter.

·

On October 27, 2026, the Company’s board of directors approved a quarterly dividend of $0.15 per common share to stockholders of record as of November 20, 2026, to be paid on December 4, 2026.    This is an increase of $0.05 per common share, or 50%, from the dividend declared in July 2026.

Commentary from Executive Management

Robert R. Chapman III, CEO of the Bank, commented: “Bank of the James Financial Group once again produced record quarterly profits during the third quarter, perpetuating the momentum which our corporation has generated thus far during 2026. Our team continues to do an outstanding job of serving our customers, and we appreciate the trust which our clients have placed in our organization.

“We are also very pleased to announce a 50% increase in our quarterly cash dividend from $0.10 per share to $0.15 per share.    This is a well-deserved enhancement for our many loyal shareholders in appreciation for their participation in the Company’s journey over the past 27 years.”

Mike Syrek, President of the Bank, added:  “Bank of the James’ loan portfolio and its deposit portfolio each reached all-time highs during the third quarter.  It is especially notable that the net loan portfolio increased by $7.95 million during the quarter despite the repayment of one $10.07 million loan.  These milestone achievements are a testament to the hard work of the entire team,  not just this year but over the course of many years.  We will continue to focus upon building relationships with our clients on both the loan and deposit fronts.”
