How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Pre-tax, pre-provision income financial
"Pre-tax, pre-provision income totaled a record $540 million"
Pre-tax, pre-provision income is a measure of a financial firm's earnings before deducting taxes and the money it sets aside to cover potential loan losses. Think of it as the company’s operating profit before accounting for future bad debts and taxes; like a shop’s sales minus running costs but before any emergency savings for damaged goods. Investors use it to see core profitability and to compare operating performance across periods or firms without the noise of loan-loss reserves and tax effects.
Net interest margin financial
"Net interest margin was 3.49% in the third quarter of 2026"
Net interest margin measures how much a bank earns from lending and investing compared with what it pays for funding, expressed as a percentage of its interest-earning assets. Think of it like a grocery store’s markup: it shows the gap between buying cost and selling price per dollar of goods — here, the cost is interest paid and the sale is interest received. Investors watch it because a higher margin usually means a bank is more profitable and better at managing interest rate and credit conditions.
Allowance for loan losses financial
"The allowance for loan losses was $865 million"
Allowance for loan losses is money set aside by a bank to cover potential losses if some loans don’t get repaid. It helps the bank stay prepared for bad debts, much like setting aside savings for unexpected expenses. This ensures the bank remains stable even if some borrowers can’t pay back their loans.
Nonperforming assets financial
"Nonperforming assets were 0.30% of total assets"
Nonperforming assets are loans or investments that are not generating expected payments or returns because the borrower has fallen behind on payments or the investment has lost value. They matter to investors because a high level of nonperforming assets can indicate financial trouble for a bank or institution, potentially affecting its stability and profitability.
Available-for-sale debt securities financial
"changes in the value of available-for-sale debt securities net of tax"
A type of debt investment—like bonds or loans a company buys—that the company intends to hold for a while but may sell before it matures. Think of it as lending money with the option to sell the IOU; changes in its market value alter the company’s reported net worth now but usually don’t affect reported profit until the investment is actually sold, so investors watch these holdings for balance-sheet risk and potential future gains or losses.
Total revenue $823 million Up 6% year over year
Net income $382 million Up 4% year over year
Diluted earnings per share $2.76 per diluted share Up 4% year over year

NEWS RELEASE

EAST WEST BANCORP REPORTS RECORD QUARTERLY NET INCOME OF $382 MILLION AND RECORD QUARTERLY DILUTED EARNINGS PER SHARE OF $2.76 ON RECORD TOTAL REVENUE

Pasadena, California – October 20, 2026 – East West Bancorp, Inc. (“East West” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: EWBC), parent company of East West Bank, reported third quarter 2026 net income of $382 million, or $2.76 per diluted share. Total loans and deposits reached new record levels of $59.7 billion and $71.5 billion, respectively, as of September 30, 2026. Return on average assets was 1.79%, return on average common equity was 16.3%, and return on average tangible common equity1 was 17.2%.

“I am pleased to report another record-breaking quarter for East West,” said Dominic Ng, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “Revenue, net interest income, pre-tax pre-provision income (“PTPP”), net income, and diluted earnings per share all set new records. Deposits and loans also finished the quarter at record levels, with noninterest-bearing demand deposits increasing nearly 15% year-over-year. This deposit growth underscores the success of our small business checking strategy and reflects our ability to build broader, more valuable relationships with our customers.”

“Fee income remained strong, increasing 11% year-over-year during the first nine months of 2026, supported by solid third-quarter growth in commercial deposit account fees. Our disciplined approach to credit and expense management continued to bear fruit this quarter. Asset quality remained resilient, and given continued uncertainty in the economic outlook, we further bolstered our allowance for loan losses,” said Ng.

“East West continues to operate from a position of strength. Our diversified business model, conservatively managed balance sheet, and industry-leading profitability should enable us to deliver top-quartile returns for our shareholders in the years ahead,” Ng concluded.

Factors that might cause future results to differ materially from historical performance and any forward-looking statements include, but are not limited to: changes in local, regional and global business, economic and political conditions and natural or geopolitical events; the soundness of other financial institutions and the impacts related to or resulting from bank failures and other industry volatility, including potential increased regulatory requirements, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (“FDIC”) insurance premiums and assessments, and deposit withdrawals; changes in trade, tariff, tax, monetary and fiscal policies; changes in immigration laws and enforcement practices, or travel and visa related policies; current or potential disputes between the U.S., the People’s Republic of China and other countries; armed conflict involving Iran or heightened geopolitical tensions in other regions, including resulting oil price volatility and energy and other supply disruptions; changes in the commercial and consumer real estate markets; changes in consumer or commercial spending, savings and borrowing habits, patterns and behaviors; the Company’s ability to compete effectively against financial institutions and other entities, including as a result of emerging technologies; the success and timing of the Company’s business strategies; the Company’s ability to retain key officers and employees; changes in market interest rates, competition, regulatory requirements and product mix; changes in the Company’s costs of operation, compliance and expansion; disruption, failure in, or breach of, the Company’s operational or security systems or infrastructure, or those of third party vendors with which the Company does business, including as a result of cyber-attacks, and the disclosure or misuse of confidential information; the adequacy of the Company’s risk management framework; future credit quality and performance, including expectations regarding future credit losses and allowance levels; adverse changes to the Company’s credit ratings; legal proceedings, regulatory investigations and their resolution; the Company’s capital requirements and its ability to generate capital internally or raise capital on favorable terms; the impact on the Company’s liquidity due to changes in its ability to receive dividends from subsidiaries; any strategic acquisitions or divestitures; and the introduction of new or expanded products and services or other events that may directly or indirectly result in a negative impact on the financial performance of the Company and its customers.

For a more detailed discussion of some of the factors that might cause future results to differ materially from historical performance and any forward-looking statements, see the Company’s Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, filed with the SEC on February 27, 2026 under the heading Item 1A. The Company uses certain non-GAAP financial measures to provide supplemental information regarding the Company’s performance. Non-GAAP measures used consist of FTE net interest income and total revenue. The FTE adjustment relates to tax exempt interest on certain investment securities and loans. Adjusted total revenue and adjusted total revenue (FTE) reflect the adjustments related to the discount accretion and interest recoveries from the full payment on purchased credit-impaired and workout loans and DC Solar recoveries (as applicable). Adjusted noninterest expense reflects the change in equity award expense recognition for retirement eligible employees, the FDIC special assessment and DC Solar recoveries (as applicable).

Efficiency ratio (FTE) represents noninterest expense divided by total revenue (FTE). Adjusted efficiency ratio and adjusted efficiency ratio (FTE) reflect the impacts of the aforementioned adjustments. Pre-tax, pre-provision income (FTE) represents total revenue (FTE) less noninterest expense. Adjusted pre-tax, pre-provision income (FTE) represents total revenue (FTE) less adjusted noninterest expense.

Table 16 (continued)
Return on average TCE represents tangible net income divided by average tangible book value. Tangible net income excludes the after-tax impacts of the amortization of mortgage servicing assets. Adjusted return on average TCE represents adjusted tangible net income divided by average tangible book value. Adjusted tangible net income is tangible net income excluding the following tax-effected impacts: discount accretion and interest recoveries from the full payment on purchased credit-impaired and workout loans, change in equity award expense recognition for retirement eligible employees, FDIC special assessment and DC Solar recoveries, and the impact of the CA SSF. Given that the use of such measures and ratios is more prevalent in the banking industry, and are used by banking regulators and analysts, the Company has included them below for discussion.
