Software-defined vehicle architectures are designs where a car’s capabilities — from safety systems to entertainment and driving assists — are controlled mainly by centralized software rather than separate hardware boxes. Like a smartphone that gains new features through app updates, these architectures let automakers add functions, fix bugs, and sell ongoing services after a vehicle is sold, which can boost recurring revenue, shorten product cycles and concentrate risk around software quality and cybersecurity.
