Rhea-AI Filing Summary

Mercer International Inc. (MERC) reported that the Government of Canada, through Prairies Economic Development Canada, has committed C$20 million (approximately US$14 million) in financial support to its subsidiary Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. under the Regional Tariff Response Initiative. The package consists of a C$1 million non-repayable contribution and a C$19 million repayable contribution, with repayment scheduled to commence in 2031, subject to the terms of a contribution agreement.

Mercer states that this funding will provide capital to support Mercer Peace River’s broader transformation plan to improve productivity, modernize the mill, and prepare the facility for expanded bio-energy production and carbon capture and storage, building on a carbon dioxide capture demonstration unit already in place. Mercer also reiterates its broader operations, including consolidated annual production capacity of 2.1 million tonnes of pulp and significant lumber, engineered wood, pallet and biofuel capacity.

Item 9.01 Financial Statements and Exhibits Exhibits
Financial statements, pro forma financial information, or exhibit attachments filed with this report.
Government support amount C$20 million (approximately US$14 million) Committed by the Government of Canada to Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd.
Non-repayable contribution C$1 million Portion of the C$20 million government support
Repayable contribution C$19 million Portion of support with repayment scheduled to commence in 2031
Repayment start 2031 Scheduled commencement of repayment of the C$19 million contribution
Pulp production capacity 2.1 million tonnes Consolidated annual pulp production capacity for Mercer International Inc.
Lumber production capacity 1,023 million board feet Consolidated annual lumber production capacity
Biofuels production capacity 230,000 metric tonnes Consolidated annual biofuels production capacity
non-repayable contribution financial
"The support consists of a C$1 million non-repayable contribution and a C$19 million"
A non-repayable contribution is money or resources given to a company—often by a government, grant-maker, or investor—that the recipient does not have to pay back. It matters to investors because it increases a company’s available funds or reduces project costs without adding debt, similar to receiving a gift that boosts cash or lowers expenses; accounting rules determine whether it appears as income, a capital offset, or another line on the financial statements.
repayable contribution financial
"and a C$19 million repayable contribution, with repayment scheduled to commence"
A repayable contribution is financial support (often from a government agency or development fund) provided to an organization that looks like a grant but must be paid back under specified conditions—for example on a set schedule, when revenue reaches a threshold, or upon sale of assets. Repayment terms can be interest-free, low-interest, or linked to performance. It matters to investors because it creates a future cash outflow or contingent liability that can affect a company’s cash flow and valuation—like a gift that comes with a return policy.
Regional Tariff Response Initiative regulatory
"to its subsidiary, Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. under the Regional Tariff Response Initiative."
carbon capture and storage technical
"prepare the facility for the expansion of bio-energy production and carbon capture and storage."
Carbon capture and storage is a set of technologies that remove carbon dioxide from industrial emissions or the air and keep it isolated, usually by compressing it and injecting it deep underground for long-term storage. For investors, it matters because it can lower a company's regulatory and climate risk, create new revenue or cost opportunities, and influence future demand for energy, materials, and services—think of it as a vacuum and lockbox that helps firms meet emissions limits and avoid penalties or lost market share.
biofuels financial
"and 230,000 metric tonnes of biofuels."
Fuels produced from recently living organic material, such as crops, plant residues, algae, or waste, that can be used as alternatives or blends with conventional petroleum fuels for transportation and energy. They matter to investors because they affect demand for agricultural commodities, energy infrastructure, and clean‑energy subsidies; like swapping one type of gasoline for another, the shift to biofuels changes which companies, technologies, and supply chains capture revenue and face regulatory pressure.

Mercer International Inc. Announces C$20 Million (Approximately US$14 Million) in Government of Canada Support for its Peace River Mill

NEW YORK, NY, August 26, 2026 — Mercer International Inc. (“Mercer” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: MERC), a global forest products company today announced that the Government of Canada, through Prairies Economic Development Canada (“PrairiesCan”), has committed C$20 million (approximately US$14 million) in financial support to its subsidiary, Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. (“MPR”), under the Regional Tariff Response Initiative.

The support consists of a C$1 million non-repayable contribution and a C$19 million repayable contribution, with repayment scheduled to commence in 2031, subject to the terms of the contribution agreement. The funding was announced today by The Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for PrairiesCan, during a visit to the MPR mill in northern Alberta.

The funding provides capital to support MPR’s broader transformation plan, designed to improve productivity and modernize the mill. This includes improvements to prepare the facility for the expansion of bio-energy production and carbon capture and storage. The funding builds on work already underway at the mill, including the carbon dioxide capture demonstration unit.

“This investment is an important step in the continued modernization of Mercer Peace River,” stated Juan Carlos Bueno, President and CEO of Mercer. “It supports improvements to the mill’s productivity and competitiveness and reflects the important role MPR plays within northern Alberta’s forest products economy. I also want to recognize the work of our Peace River team in advancing these improvements.”

“Canada did not choose this trade conflict with the United States, but we will stand up for the workers, businesses and communities under pressure,” said The Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada. “For more than 35 years, Mercer Peace River has been an anchor of northern Alberta’s economy. This C$20 million investment will help the mill modernize, compete and protect the good jobs that families across the region depend on as we build a stronger, more resilient Canadian economy.”

About Mercer Peace River Pulp

MPR operates within northern Alberta’s integrated forest products sector, where fiber from the region’s mixed boreal forests supports a range of products and uses. Sawlogs suitable for lumber are processed by regional sawmills, while pulpwood and residual fiber from sawmilling — including chips and bark — support pulp and energy production. Together, these fiber flows connect forest management, regional sawmilling, pulp production and renewable energy generation, supporting broader utilization of the region’s fiber supply.
