How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Filing Explained

The capital figures are preliminary, and fourth-quarter growth figures remain management guidance rather than completed results.

The filing adds a preliminary capital snapshot: at September 30, 2026, Northern Trust’s standardized common equity tier 1 ratio was 12.4%; the company says its and its principal bank subsidiary’s capital ratios exceeded minimum requirements for well-capitalized classification.

Management’s fourth-quarter 2026 guidance calls for net interest income growth of 8–9% and total revenue growth of 6–7% versus the fourth quarter of 2025. These figures are guidance, not results already achieved.

fully taxable equivalent (FTE) financial
"presented on a fully taxable equivalent (FTE) basis"
A fully taxable equivalent (FTE) converts income that is exempt from federal income tax—most commonly municipal bond interest—into the pretax yield a taxable investment would need to produce to match that tax-exempt income. It is calculated by dividing the tax-exempt yield by (1 − marginal tax rate), or by adding back the tax benefit when adjusting portfolio or bank interest figures; the conversion depends on the assumed marginal tax rate and does not account for state or alternative minimum tax differences.
Assets Under Custody/Administration financial
"Total Assets Under Custody/Administration"
Common Equity Tier 1 Capital financial
"Common Equity Tier 1 Capital Ratio"
Core capital a bank holds consisting mainly of common shares and retained profits that can absorb losses without forcing the bank to sell assets or seek emergency help; items that can’t reliably cover losses are excluded. Think of it as the bank’s shock-absorbing cushion: a higher common equity tier 1 (CET1) level and ratio means regulators and investors view the bank as better able to survive bad loans or market shocks, so it signals lower risk to shareholders and creditors.
Allowance for Credit Losses financial
"Ending Allowance for Credit Losses"
Allowance for credit losses is a reserve set aside by a financial institution to cover potential losses from borrowers who may not repay their loans. It acts like a safety net, helping the institution prepare for loans that might turn sour. For investors, it signals how cautious the institution is about the quality of its loans and potential risks to its financial health.

Q3 2026
The provision in the current quarter primarily resulted from the charge-off of one Commercial and Institutional (C&I) loan.
Q2 2026
The negative provision in the prior quarter resulted from a decrease in the collective reserve, partially offset by an increase in individual reserves. The decrease in the collective reserve was primarily driven by a strengthening macroeconomic outlook and improved credit quality for the Commercial Real Estate and C&I portfolios. The increase in the individual reserve was driven by a small number of non-performing loans.
Q3 2025
The negative provision in the prior-year quarter resulted from a decrease in collective reserves driven by improved macroeconomic factors primarily impacting the C&I portfolio and improved projections for Residential Real Estate.

RECONCILIATION TO FULLY TAXABLE EQUIVALENT
The following table presents a reconciliation of interest income, net interest income, net interest margin, total revenue, income before taxes, and pre-tax margin prepared in accordance with GAAP to such measures on an FTE non-GAAP basis. Management believes this presentation facilitates the analysis of asset yields and provides a clearer indication of these financial measures for comparative purposes. When adjusted to an FTE basis, yields on taxable, nontaxable and partially taxable assets are comparable; however, the adjustment to an FTE basis has no impact on net income.

Management believes an FTE presentation provides a clearer indication of these financial measures for comparative purposes. Net interest income (FTE) – Non-GAAP and net interest margin (FTE) – Non-GAAP and other FTE measures include the tax equivalent adjustments on tax-exempt income, consistent with industry practice. The adjustments are based on the federal income tax rate, where the rate is adjusted for applicable state income taxes, net of related federal tax benefit. When adjusted to an FTE basis, yields on taxable, nontaxable, and partially taxable assets are comparable; however, the adjustment to an FTE basis has no impact on net income. Below is a reconciliation of the financial measures presented on an FTE basis. Page 10
