Rhea-AI Filing Summary

Vodafone Group reports that its African subsidiary Vodacom Group has begun a multi-year spectrum investment programme in Egypt with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.

In the first phase, Vodafone Egypt has acquired 2 x 10MHz of 1,800MHz spectrum. The spectrum payment will be made in four annual instalments, starting with US$100 million (€84 million) in FY26. Following this purchase, Vodafone Egypt’s 1,800MHz holding doubles from 2 x 10MHz to 2 x 20MHz, while other bands remain unchanged.

Vodafone Group expects to recognise an additional intangible spectrum asset of about US$350 million (€294 million) related to this 1,800MHz acquisition. The added capacity is expected to support growing demand for reliable, high quality voice and data services in Egypt, ahead of a planned next phase covering 3,500MHz allocation and renewal of 2,600MHz spectrum between FY28 and FY32.

Insights

Vodafone locks in key Egypt spectrum, adding a US$350m asset.

Vodafone Group is reinforcing its Egyptian position by securing 2 x 10MHz in the 1,800MHz band, doubling Vodafone Egypt’s holding there to 2 x 20MHz. This band is important for mobile data capacity, so the move directly supports rising data traffic.

The company will spread payments over four annual instalments, beginning with US$100 million in FY26, and expects to book about US$350 million as an additional intangible spectrum asset. This treats the spectrum as a long-lived strategic asset rather than a one-off expense.

The broader programme, running into FY32, includes future 3,500MHz spectrum and renewal of 2,600MHz holdings, which are typically used for high-capacity 4G and 5G services. Future disclosures may detail further spectrum allocations and associated capital outlays as later phases proceed.

FAQ

What spectrum has Vodafone Egypt acquired in the latest VOD Form 6-K?

Vodafone Egypt has acquired 2 x 10MHz of 1,800MHz spectrum as part of a multi-year investment programme in Egypt. This doubles its 1,800MHz holding to 2 x 20MHz, enhancing mobile data capacity and supporting growing demand for reliable voice and data services.

How much will Vodafone pay for the new 1,800MHz spectrum in Egypt?

Vodafone Egypt’s 1,800MHz spectrum payment will be made in four annual instalments, starting with US$100 million in FY26. Vodafone Group expects to recognise an additional intangible spectrum asset of about US$350 million, reflecting the value of this newly acquired spectrum in Egypt.

How does the new spectrum change Vodafone Egypt’s overall spectrum holdings?

After the acquisition, Vodafone Egypt’s 1,800MHz holding increases from 2 x 10MHz to 2 x 20MHz, with expiry in 2039. Its 900MHz, 2,100MHz and 2,600MHz holdings remain unchanged, maintaining 2 x 12.5MHz, 2 x 20MHz, and 1 x 40MHz respectively, with existing expiry dates preserved.

What financial impact does the spectrum acquisition have on Vodafone Group (VOD)?

Vodafone Group expects to record an additional intangible spectrum asset of approximately US$350 million related to the 1,800MHz acquisition. The first cash instalment is US$100 million in FY26, aligning the accounting treatment with a long-term infrastructure investment in Egypt’s mobile network capacity.

What is the broader multi-year spectrum programme involving Vodafone Egypt?

Vodafone Egypt is participating in a multi-year investment programme with Egypt’s MCIT and NTRA. The initial phase covers 1,800MHz spectrum, while the next phase, expected between FY28 and FY32, involves releasing 3,500MHz spectrum and renewing existing 2,600MHz spectrum to further strengthen network capabilities.

Why is the 1,800MHz spectrum acquisition important for Vodafone Egypt’s services?

The 1,800MHz band is widely used for mobile data, so adding 2 x 10MHz materially boosts network capacity. This supports Vodafone Egypt’s aim to enhance data connectivity and maintain high quality voice and data services as customer demand for reliable mobile broadband continues to increase across the market.
