Rhea-AI Filing Summary

Washington Trust Bancorp (WASH) reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $19.4 million, up 21.3% from Q2 and 78.7% from Q3 2025; diluted earnings per share was $1.01, versus $0.83 and $0.56, respectively. Net interest income was $44.7 million, up 6.9% sequentially and 15.1% year over year, while net interest margin reached 2.84%, up 11 basis points from Q2.

At September 30, loans totaled $5.165 billion and deposits $5.436 billion; deposits rose $77.1 million from June 30 and $213.2 million year over year. Nonaccrual loans were $24.5 million, down from $39.8 million in Q2 but above $14.0 million a year earlier. A restructured $22.3 million commercial real estate office loan returned $18.5 million to accruing status and resulted in a $3.8 million charge-off.

The third-quarter provision for credit losses was $1.8 million, and net charge-offs were $3.9 million, versus $55,000 in Q2. The board declared a $0.56-per-share quarterly dividend, paid October 9, 2026, to shareholders of record October 1. Washington Trust expects a full-year 2026 effective tax rate of approximately 21.5%.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Filing Explained

Third-quarter results included a $954,000 non-taxable life-insurance gain and $283,000 of previously unrecognized second-quarter loan interest.

On October 19, 2026, Washington Trust reported unaudited third-quarter results; at September 30, 2026, shareholders’ equity was $530.8 million, down $22.8 million from June 30, 2026, and book value per share was $27.82 versus $29.02.

The company attributes the equity decline to a fall in accumulated other comprehensive income, reflecting lower fair value of available-for-sale debt securities as market interest rates changed, as well as quarterly dividend declarations. Quarterly net interest income included $283,000 of previously unrecognized second-quarter interest tied to the office-loan resolution, which added $0.01 per diluted share and 2 basis points to net interest margin; a $954,000 non-taxable gain from bank-owned life insurance added $0.05 per diluted share.

Provision for credit losses $1.8 million Third quarter 2026
Net interest margin financial
"Net interest margin expanded to 2.84%, up by 11 basis points."
Net interest margin measures how much a bank earns from lending and investing compared with what it pays for funding, expressed as a percentage of its interest-earning assets. Think of it like a grocery store’s markup: it shows the gap between buying cost and selling price per dollar of goods — here, the cost is interest paid and the sale is interest received. Investors watch it because a higher margin usually means a bank is more profitable and better at managing interest rate and credit conditions.
Nonaccrual loans financial
"Nonaccrual loans were $24.5 million, or 0.48% of total loans"
Nonaccrual loans are loans a lender has stopped counting toward interest income because the borrower is overdue or unlikely to pay; the lender only records cash payments received and may set aside extra funds to cover potential losses. For investors, a rising number or amount of nonaccrual loans signals weaker credit quality, lower future interest revenue and larger potential write-downs — similar to pausing expected subscription income when many customers stop paying.
Allowance for credit losses financial
"The allowance for credit losses ("ACL") on loans amounted to $40.5 million"
Allowance for credit losses is a reserve set aside by a financial institution to cover potential losses from borrowers who may not repay their loans. It acts like a safety net, helping the institution prepare for loans that might turn sour. For investors, it signals how cautious the institution is about the quality of its loans and potential risks to its financial health.
Common equity tier 1 ratio financial
"common equity tier 1 ratio of 11.93%"
The common equity tier 1 ratio is a measure of a bank's financial strength, showing how much high-quality core capital it has compared to its total risk-weighted assets. Think of it as a safety buffer or cushion that helps ensure the bank can withstand economic shocks. For investors, a higher ratio indicates a stronger, more resilient bank, making it a key indicator of its financial health.
Accumulated other comprehensive income financial
"the accumulated other comprehensive income ("AOCI") component of shareholders’ equity"
Accumulated other comprehensive income is a running total on a company’s balance sheet that records certain gains and losses not included in reported profit, such as unrealized gains or losses on some investments, currency translation differences, and pension plan adjustments. Think of it like items in a shopping cart you haven’t paid for yet: it doesn’t affect current profit but changes the company’s overall equity and signals potential future swings in value that investors should watch.
Net income $19.4 million Up 21.3% from Q2 2026 and 78.7% from Q3 2025.
Diluted earnings per share $1.01 Up $0.18 from Q2 2026 and $0.45 from Q3 2025.
Net interest income $44.7 million Up 6.9% from Q2 2026 and 15.1% from Q3 2025.
Net interest margin 2.84% Up 11 basis points from Q2 2026 and 44 basis points from Q3 2025.

CONSOLIDATED AVERAGE BALANCE SHEETS (FTE Basis)
(Unaudited; Dollars in thousands)
The following tables present daily average balance, interest, and yield/rate information, as well as net interest margin on an FTE basis. Tax-exempt income is converted to an FTE basis using the statutory federal income tax rate. Unrealized gains (losses) on available for sale securities, changes in fair value on mortgage loans held for sale, and basis adjustments associated with fair value hedges are excluded from the average balance and yield calculations. Nonaccrual loans are included in amounts presented for loans. Interest income attributable to nonaccrual loans is included in accordance with accounting policy as disclosed in our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025.
