Advanced metering infrastructure project designed to strengthen day-to-day water utility operations and support sustained growth for the City of Mustang and its residents

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. & MUSTANG, Okla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ameresco, Inc., (NYSE: AMRC), a leading energy infrastructure company delivering integrated solutions to create reliable power and modernize infrastructure, today announced the completion of an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) water meter project for the City of Mustang, Oklahoma. The $5.9M project replaced more than 8,000 water meters, modernizing the City’s metering system and supporting the long-term success of its water utility operations.

Ameresco worked closely with City staff from initial planning through final installation, beginning with an Investment Grade Audit that evaluated the existing metering system and assessed technology and implementation options. The evaluation gave the City a comprehensive view of project viability, costs, and long-term considerations, which supported informed decision-making aligned with the needs of the community.

Ameresco then managed installation and stakeholder coordination, completing construction in five months—half the original 10-month schedule. The City transitioned to its new AMI system with minimal disruption to residents and water utility operations.

“One of the things we appreciated most about working with Ameresco was that their involvement went beyond simply providing equipment or managing an installation,” said David Russell, Director of Public Works for the City of Mustang. “They served as a partner throughout the process, from evaluating our existing system and helping us determine whether the investment made sense, to selecting the appropriate approach, managing implementation, and helping City staff transition to the new system.”

Through a collaborative, data-driven approach, the project delivered key benefits for the City and its residents, including:

  • Automated, remote meter reading across the City’s water system
  • Detailed, timely usage data that helps City staff identify unusual consumption and investigate potential leaks
  • Streamlined billing, account research, and customer service processes
  • Continued customer service and billing coordination throughout the citywide meter replacement
  • A customer portal that gives residents direct access to their water consumption information

“The City of Mustang’s collaboration with Ameresco is a direct reflection of how thoughtful planning and modern infrastructure create lasting value for a community,” said Louis Maltezos, Co-President of Ameresco. “Together, the City and Ameresco have strengthened the reliability of Mustang’s water system and established the operational insight required to meet the demands of growth with confidence.”

advanced metering infrastructure technical
A network of digital meters, communication systems and data platforms that lets utilities read usage remotely, detect outages, and send or receive signals about supply and demand. Think of it as the utility’s nervous system that replaces periodic manual meter readings with continuous, two-way data flow. Investors care because it changes how utilities earn and spend money: it can cut operating costs, enable new services and pricing, improve revenue accuracy, and create capital needs and cybersecurity risks that affect returns.
automatic meter reading technical
Automatic meter reading is a technology that collects energy, water or gas usage data from customers’ meters remotely and automatically, without a person visiting each site. For investors it matters because it can lower operating costs, improve billing accuracy and enable new services like real‑time usage insights — similar to replacing paper mail with email, it speeds information flow and can boost efficiency and customer retention for utilities and service providers.
amr technical
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is when bacteria, viruses or other microbes evolve so the drugs designed to stop them no longer work, often because of genetic changes and overuse of treatments. For investors, AMR reshapes healthcare demand and regulation: it raises treatment costs, drives demand for new drugs, diagnostics and hospital measures, and creates long-term market opportunities and risks—like a widening pothole that forces industry-wide rerouting and repair.
