Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

G. Janelle Frost, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “Third-quarter results reflected an increasingly competitive workers’ compensation market, softer audit premium, and higher expenses that weighed on our net combined ratio. At the same time, we maintained disciplined pricing, delivered favorable prior-year loss reserve development and saw encouraging improvement in new business activity late in the quarter. As we move forward, we remain focused on sustaining that momentum, while continuing to apply the underwriting discipline, proactive claims management and specialized safety expertise that underpin AMERISAFE’s long-term value.”

  • Voluntary premiums on policies written in the quarter increased 0.8%, compared to the third quarter of 2025, driven by strong renewal pricing and continued policy count growth.
  • Payroll audits remained additive to premiums written during the quarter; however, policy cancellations and other related premium adjustments more than offset that contribution. As a result, payroll audits and related premium adjustments decreased premiums written by $1.6 million in the third quarter of 2026, compared with an increase of $2.5 million in the same period in 2025.
  • Loss and loss adjustment expenses benefited from $6.9 million of favorable case reserve development, primarily on accident years 2023 and prior, resulting in a net loss ratio of 62.6%, compared to favorable prior accident year development of $8.9 million and a net loss ratio of 58.5% in the third quarter of 2025.
  • Underwriting expense ratio was 32.5% for the quarter, compared with 31.1% in the third quarter of 2025. The increase was primarily attributable to increased insurance-related assessments, higher compensation costs, and higher commission expense.
  • Our effective tax rate for the quarter was 20.0%, compared with 21.0% in the third quarter of 2025. The decrease was primarily due to a higher proportion of income from tax-exempt investments.

  • Net investment income increased 0.6% to $6.6 million for the quarter, driven by an improved portfolio book yield and disciplined expense management. These benefits were partially offset by lower average investable assets compared to the prior-year period, primarily due to capital returned to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
  • Net unrealized losses on equity securities were $0.2 million in the third quarter of 2026, compared with $4.1 million of net unrealized gains on equity securities in the third quarter of 2025.
  • As of September 30, 2026, the carrying value of AMERISAFE’s investment portfolio, including cash and cash equivalents, was $753.3 million.

Key Terms

net combined ratio financial
Net combined ratio measures an insurance company's underwriting profitability by comparing claims paid and operating costs to earned premiums after accounting for reinsurance. A ratio below 100% means the insurer is making money on its insurance policies; above 100% means it is paying out more in claims and costs than it receives in premiums. Investors use it like a household budget check to see whether the core insurance business is sustainably profitable or dependent on investment income.
non-gaap financial measures financial
Non-GAAP financial measures are numbers companies use to show their financial performance that exclude certain expenses or income. They help investors see how the company might perform without one-time costs or other unusual items, giving a different perspective from official reports. However, since they can be adjusted, they don’t always tell the full story and should be looked at alongside standard financial figures.
gaap financial
GAAP, or Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, are a set of standardized rules and guidelines that companies follow when preparing their financial statements. They ensure consistency, transparency, and comparability across different companies, making it easier for investors to understand and compare financial information accurately. This helps investors make informed decisions based on trustworthy and uniform financial reports.
View in glossary
restricted stock units financial
Restricted stock units are a type of company reward where employees are promised shares of stock, but they only fully own these shares after meeting certain conditions, like staying with the company for a set time. They matter because they can become valuable assets and are often used to motivate employees to help the company succeed.
