Insights
ASUR's April traffic shows mixed performance: 3.8% overall growth with Puerto Rico booming (+13.5%) while Mexico stagnates (+0.5%).
The April 2025 traffic data for ASUR reveals clear geographic divergence across its 6.0 million total passengers, representing a 3.8% year-over-year increase. The standout performer is Puerto Rico with 13.5% growth, driven by remarkable 29.6% growth in international travel and solid 11.6% domestic growth. Colombia posted respectable 4.8% growth, while Mexico - ASUR's largest market - barely grew at 0.5%.
Looking at individual airports reveals concerning trends in tourist destinations. Cancun, ASUR's flagship airport handling 2.57 million passengers (43% of total traffic), saw a 0.7% decline, dragged down by a 3.3% drop in international travelers. Cozumel's international traffic plunged 28.4%. Meanwhile, secondary Mexican airports like Veracruz (+12.5%) and Merida (+8.5%) showed strength.
In Colombia, Rionegro near Medellín dominates with 1.09 million passengers and 6.7% growth, benefiting from 15.6% international traffic expansion. The Holy Week holiday shift from March 2024 to April 2025 likely boosted April figures, particularly evident in the 5.9% overall domestic growth versus just 0.5% for international.
Year-to-date performance highlights this regional divergence: Mexico remains down 3.6% YTD, while Puerto Rico (+11.3%) and Colombia (+6.0%) show consistent strength. This pattern of struggling Mexican international traffic alongside robust growth in other regions suggests significant structural differences in market dynamics across ASUR's portfolio.
ASUR posts 3.8% traffic growth with strong performances in Puerto Rico (+13.5%) and Colombia (+4.8%) offsetting Mexico's weakness (+0.5%).
ASUR's April 2025 traffic report reveals significant regional variation within its overall 3.8% growth. The company's geographical diversification is proving valuable as Puerto Rico (+13.5%) and Colombia (+4.8%) compensate for Mexico's minimal 0.5% growth.
The year-to-date figures amplify this divergence: Puerto Rico showing strong momentum at +11.3%, Colombia steady at +6.0%, while Mexico has declined 3.6%. This pattern suggests a sustained shift in ASUR's geographic performance dynamics rather than temporary fluctuation.
Traffic composition reveals domestic travel (+5.9% overall) significantly outpacing international (+0.5%). In Mexico specifically, domestic growth of 5.1% partially offset international decline of 3.3%. This pattern appears across markets, with domestic traffic driving growth in all three regions.
Cancun airport, representing 43% of ASUR's total passenger volume with 2.57 million travelers in April, registered a 0.7% decline, with international passengers down 3.2%. This performance in ASUR's largest operation warrants close monitoring given its outsized contribution to the company's operational scale.
As noted in the release, Holy Week timing (April 2025 versus March 2024) likely provided a temporary boost to this month's figures, particularly for domestic leisure travel. This calendar effect should be considered when evaluating the underlying traffic trends.
The data confirms ASUR's three distinct operating environments are performing at different trajectories: Puerto Rico accelerating, Colombia steadily growing, and Mexico facing challenges, particularly in international tourism destinations.
