digital twin technical
A digital twin is a live virtual replica of a physical asset, process, or system that mirrors real-world behavior using data and models so users can test changes, predict problems, and measure performance without touching the real thing. For investors, digital twins matter because they can lower maintenance costs, speed product development, improve uptime and reliability, and make future cash flows and risks easier to forecast — like using a flight simulator to safely train and tune a real airplane.
iiot technical
A network of sensors, machines and controllers that collect and share operational data across factories, power plants, transport fleets and other industrial sites. Like a nervous system for heavy equipment, IIoT turns physical operations into continuous data streams that help companies spot problems sooner, cut downtime, improve efficiency and shift spending toward software and services—factors that can change profit margins, growth prospects and the value of industrial companies for investors.
ethernet/ip technical
EtherNet/IP is an industry-standard communication method that lets industrial machines and controllers talk to each other over regular Ethernet networks; think of it as a common language and traffic rules for factory equipment. It matters to investors because widespread use drives demand for compatible hardware, software and services, improves productivity and reduces integration costs, and therefore can influence sales, margins and competitive position for companies in automation and industrial networking.
modbus tcp/ip technical
Modbus TCP/IP is a common industrial communication protocol that sends control and measurement data between devices over standard Ethernet using the Internet Protocol suite (TCP/IP). Think of it as a shared language that programmable controllers, sensors and monitoring systems use to read and write values across a factory or utility network. It matters to investors because widespread use, compatibility with existing IT networks, and related cybersecurity or integration costs can affect the value and scalability of companies selling industrial equipment, automation services, or IoT solutions.
class i, division 2 technical
A Class I, Division 2 location is a regulatory label for work areas where flammable gases, vapors or liquids are not normally present but can appear under abnormal conditions; it tells engineers which types of electrical equipment are allowed so sparks or hot surfaces won’t ignite those substances. For investors this matters because classifying a facility this way affects what gear must be purchased, installation standards, inspections, insurance and potential delays or costs—similar to requiring special fireproof wiring in a high-risk room.

Innovative gateway provides protocol conversion with ability to add Docker containers

ST. LOUIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Belden Inc. (NYSE: BDC), a leading global provider of complete connection solutions, today announced the release of its new ProSoft Technology ELX3 ProLinx Edge™ Gateway. This offering unites operational technology (OT) protocol conversion with lightweight, Docker-based edge application hosting on a single ruggedized hardware platform—enabling organizations to deploy data acquisition, digital connectivity (including digital twin/asset monitoring) and CPU-based edge analytics directly at the machine level. The gateway gathers and processes data at the network edge for localized decision-making.

As digitization and industrial internet of things (IIoT) transformations push forward, organizations have new opportunities to extract, analyze and act on OT data to propel efficiencies, reduce scrap and waste and reach sustainability targets. The ProLinx Edge Gateway is designed for large, complex industrial networks with a growing number of connected devices. Manufacturers and energy operators in industries such as oil & gas, power distribution and warehousing and logistics can run compact AI inference models, digital twin connectivity agents and near-real-time analytics containers alongside proven EtherNet/IP™–to–Modbus TCP/IP protocol gateway functions—all within a single device rated for harsh environments.

The gateway offers powerful features that empower organizations to:

  • Achieve OT protocol conversion by enabling EtherNet/IP™ and Modbus TCP/IP data exchange to allow for communication between dissimilar devices in the field.
  • Deploy user-defined containers by empowering custom code and algorithm creation for advanced applications like machine learning and predictive maintenance, digital twin/asset monitoring and near-real-time analytics.
  • Future-proof edge deployments with a platform designed to expand as additional protocol container gateways are released.

“The ELX3 is ideal for industrial companies looking to unite data from disparate IIoT devices and legacy OT equipment, bringing silos of automation into centralized systems for analysis and action,” said Erik Syme, Director of Program Management, ProSoft Technology. “By supporting both ProSoft protocol gateway containers and custom containers, the ELX3 gives users the flexibility they need to address today’s most demanding edge applications and scale as their operations evolve.”

Engineered to withstand shock, vibration and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) tolerances, with a temperature range of -40ºC to +70ºC, and rated for Class I, Division 2 environments, the ProLinx Edge Gateway is suitable for use in harsh environments. An industrial-grade solution, the gateway addresses the complex requirements of varied industries, including automotive, consumer packaged goods, food and beverage, machine building, process manufacturing, warehousing and logistics, metals, mining, oil and gas and water and wastewater.
