Key Terms

panamax technical
Panamax is a classification for cargo ships built to the maximum dimensions that could pass through the original Panama Canal locks. Investors care because ship size affects how goods move, port demand and shipping rates—think of it like a piece of furniture sized to fit through a doorway: if many ships fit the canal, freight flows more smoothly and competition changes, which can influence shipping companies’ revenues and broader trade-dependent businesses.
very large gas carriers technical
Very large gas carriers are ocean-going ships built to carry huge volumes of liquefied gases, such as liquefied petroleum gas or other hydrocarbon gases, over long distances. For investors, they matter because their size drives lower per-unit shipping costs—like a big truck hauling many crates at once—while also concentrating market and regulatory risks (charter rates, fuel, safety rules and demand swings) that affect freight revenue and vessel value.
lpg technical
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a flammable mix of light hydrocarbons, stored as a liquid under modest pressure and used for heating, cooking, industrial processes, and as vehicle fuel. Investors watch LPG because its supply, price and storage costs affect energy companies, utilities and manufacturers that rely on it—think of it as the bottled fuel that heats homes and powers equipment, so changes in availability or price can influence earnings and inflation-sensitive sectors.
