Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

Cat Financial, a Caterpillar (CAT) subsidiary, reported third-quarter 2026 profit of $145 million, up 8% from a year earlier. Revenue rose 10% to $1,021 million, while profit before income taxes increased 5% to $194 million. The credit-loss allowance reached $332 million, or 0.91% of finance receivables, versus $294 million, or 0.84%, at June 30, 2026. For the first nine months, revenue increased 10% to $2,959 million and profit rose 8% to $434 million. Total assets were $41,361 million at September 30, 2026, up 8% from December 31, 2025.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

Key Terms

average earning assets, write-offs, net of recoveries, allowance for credit losses, finance receivables
4 terms
average earning assets financial
"higher average earning assets of $125 million"
Average earning assets is the typical balance over a period of the assets on a financial institution’s books that generate interest or income, such as loans, securities, and interest-bearing deposits. It matters to investors because it shows the income-producing base that drives interest revenue—think of it like the average number of machines in a factory that are actually making products, which helps assess how efficiently a bank or lender turns its assets into income.
write-offs, net of recoveries financial
"Write-offs, net of recoveries, were $28 million"
The amount of previously recognized asset write-offs recorded during a period after subtracting any money recovered on assets that had been written off earlier. For example, a company may remove uncollectible receivables from its books as a write-off; if it later collects some of those receivables, the collections are counted as recoveries and reduce the net write-off figure. On financial statements this net number shows the period’s net loss of asset value from write-offs and is reflected either as an expense (or reduction of an allowance) with recoveries recorded as income or as a contra-item reducing the total write-offs.
allowance for credit losses financial
"the allowance for credit losses totaled $332 million"
Allowance for credit losses is a reserve set aside by a financial institution to cover potential losses from borrowers who may not repay their loans. It acts like a safety net, helping the institution prepare for loans that might turn sour. For investors, it signals how cautious the institution is about the quality of its loans and potential risks to its financial health.
finance receivables financial
"0.91% of finance receivables"
Finance receivables are amounts a company expects to collect from customers or borrowers after providing goods, services, leases, or loans on credit—essentially the IOUs recorded on its balance sheet. They matter to investors because they represent future cash inflows but carry the risk of nonpayment; rising receivables can signal growing sales or cash strain, and changes in their quality affect a company’s liquidity, profit forecasts, and overall financial health.

Write-offs, net of recoveries, were $28 million for the third quarter of 2026, compared with $40 million for the third quarter of 2025.
