Key Terms

sustainable bonds financial
Debt securities issued to fund or incentivize projects with clear environmental and social benefits, such as renewable energy, pollution reduction, affordable housing, or community services. Think of them like a loan with a label that directs money to positive causes; investors care because the label can affect financial risks, long-term returns and reputational exposure, and may come with reporting or targets that help track whether pledged benefits are actually delivered.
climate bonds initiative financial
An international non-profit organization that sets standards and provides a certification label for bonds funding projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions or adapting to climate change. Think of it as a trusted seal that helps investors quickly judge whether a debt issue genuinely supports climate goals; that signal can influence investor demand, pricing and reputational risk when choosing between ordinary bonds and those marketed as environmentally focused.
alignment indicators technical
Alignment indicators are measurable signs that a company's leaders, board and employees are working toward the same goals as shareholders—examples include executives owning company shares, pay that depends on performance, and a board made up of independent members. For investors, these signals act like checking whether a ship's crew is rowing together: stronger alignment suggests management decisions are more likely to boost shareholder value and lowers the risk of conflicting priorities.
climate-resilient medical
Describes assets, infrastructure, products or businesses designed or adapted to withstand and recover from climate-related impacts such as floods, storms, heat or changing precipitation. Investors care because climate-resilient choices reduce the chance of sudden losses, protect long-term cash flow and can lower future repair or compliance costs—much like a house on stilts is less likely to flood, resilient assets help preserve value through changing conditions.
climate bonds standard regulatory
A climate bonds standard is a set of technical criteria and an independent verification process used to label debt as financing projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or increase climate resilience. It gives investors a trustworthy “quality check” — like a nutrition label for green finance — so they can judge which bonds genuinely support climate goals, manage reputational and transition risk, and compare issuers on consistent rules.
certification scheme regulatory
A certification scheme is a formal program that checks whether a product, service, process or organization meets a set of agreed requirements and then issues a recognizable mark or certificate. For investors it signals that an independent third party has verified certain claims—like safety, quality or environmental practices—so it can be treated like a trusted stamp of approval that reduces uncertainty about a company’s risks and market credibility.
paris agreement regulatory
An international agreement where governments set shared goals to limit global warming and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, acting like a common roadmap for climate action. It matters to investors because those government targets drive laws, subsidies, and market demand that can raise costs for carbon-heavy businesses, create opportunities in clean energy and technology, and change long-term valuations much like a new set of rules reshapes an industry.
