Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Kansas City Life Insurance Company recorded net income of $1.7 million or $0.18 per share in the third quarter of 2026 compared to $2.8 million or $0.29 per share in the third quarter of 2025.  The decline in net income in the third quarter of 2026 reflected a $1.1 million or 1% decrease in insurance revenues and a $0.6 million or 1% decrease in investment revenues compared to the prior year.  These were partially offset by a $0.8 million or 3% decrease in operating expenses versus the prior year.

Net income totaled $19.1 million or $1.97 per share in the first nine months of 2026 compared to a net loss of $21.7 million or $2.24 per share in the first nine months of 2025.  The primary factor for the increase in net income in the first nine months of 2026 was lower operating expenses compared to the prior year.  A legal settlement accrual of $35.5 million, net of tax, related to class action lawsuits, was established in the second quarter of 2025.  Excluding this legal settlement accrual, net income would have been $13.8 million or $1.43 per share in the first nine months of 2025.  After excluding the legal settlement accrual, net income for the nine months of 2026 would have been $5.3 million or 38% higher than the prior year, largely due to a $4.7 million or 4% increase in investment revenues.
