Sarbanes-Oxley 404 is a U.S. regulation that requires a company’s management and its external auditor to report on the strength of the company’s internal controls over financial reporting. Think of it as a checklist and independent inspection that helps ensure the company’s financial statements aren’t accidentally or deliberately misleading; for investors, a clean 404 assessment reduces the risk of surprises like restatements or fraud and increases confidence in the numbers.
