Federal government affairs are the ongoing activities by businesses and organizations to monitor, comply with, and influence national laws, regulations and policies by communicating with lawmakers, regulators and federal agencies. Investors care because shifts in federal rules can change costs, market access and legal risk; effective government affairs work can reduce surprises and preserve value, like a weather forecast helping a farmer plan around storms.

A regulatory policy is the set of government rules, standards and enforcement choices that shape how companies must operate in a particular industry—like a rulebook or traffic laws for businesses. Investors care because these policies determine what companies can sell, what approvals or permits they need, how much compliance will cost, and how much legal or market risk the business faces, all of which affect future profits and stock value.
public policyregulatory
Public policy is the collection of laws, regulations, rules and government actions that shape how businesses operate and markets function. For investors it matters because those decisions change costs, allowed activities, competitive advantages and customer demand—like traffic signals or rule changes that can speed up or slow down a company’s growth, alter profit margins or shift risk and return expectations.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
MetLife, Inc. (NYSE: MET) announced that Jordan Canter will join as head of Federal Government Affairs and Regulatory Policy, effective April 20. She will oversee MetLife’s federal government affairs and global regulatory policy, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to support the company’s business priorities. Based in Washington, D.C., Canter will report to Susan Greenwell, senior vice president and head of Global Government Affairs.

Canter comes to MetLife from Allstate, where she held senior positions overseeing federal government affairs and public policy. In these roles, she led initiatives addressing a broad spectrum of financial services and insurance matters. Her background includes extensive collaboration with Congress, federal agencies, and industry stakeholders to influence and shape legislative and regulatory outcomes. Before joining Allstate in 2022, Canter honed her expertise in government affairs and regulatory policy at both The Hartford and Bank Policy Institute (formerly the Financial Services Roundtable).
