Key Terms

discontinued operations financial
Discontinued operations are parts of a company that it has decided to sell or shut down, and no longer plans to run in the future. This matters to investors because it helps them understand which parts of the business are ongoing and which are being phased out, providing a clearer picture of the company’s current performance and future prospects. Think of it like a store closing a department—it no longer contributes to sales or profits.
restricted cash financial
Cash that a company holds but cannot use for day-to-day operations because it is set aside for a specific purpose—such as meeting loan covenants, serving as collateral, funding an escrow, or complying with regulations. Like money in a locked savings account earmarked for a bill, restricted cash reduces the cash available to run the business and pay dividends or debts, so investors treat it differently when assessing a company’s true short-term financial strength.
underwriting standards financial
Guidelines that lenders, insurers, or securities underwriters use to decide which deals to approve and on what terms; they set the criteria for acceptable borrowers, loans, insurance policies, or securities offerings. Like a shopkeeper deciding which customers to trust and what price to charge, these standards determine how much risk a firm accepts and influence loan availability, interest rates, or deal pricing—factors that affect credit markets, company financing, and investor returns.
machine-learning models technical
Machine-learning models are computer programs that learn patterns from historical data to make predictions or decisions, improving as they process more examples—like a cook refining a recipe by tasting feedback. Investors pay attention because these models can boost revenue or cut costs by automating tasks, spotting market trends, or personalizing products, but their mistakes, biased outputs, or poor data can create operational and reputational risks that affect a company’s value.
