Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

BOCA RATON, Fla., Oct. 15, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Q.E.P. CO., INC. (OTCQX: QEPC) (the “Company” or “QEP”) today reported financial results for the first six months and second quarter of fiscal year 2027, which ended on August 31, 2026.

Net sales for the six months ended August 31, 2026 were $122.0 million, up $2.8 million or 2.4% from $119.2 million reported in the same period of fiscal 2026. Net sales for the second quarter ended August 31, 2026 were $61.1 million, up $3.4 million or 5.9% from $57.7 million reported in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. Sales growth was driven by continued expansion in the professional distribution channel, particularly in adhesive products, and successful retail initiatives, despite a challenging macroeconomic environment.

Len Gould, President & Chief Executive Officer, commented, "Our fiscal 2027 results highlight the resonance of our Brands with the Professional Installer, and the resilience of our core business in the face of a challenging macroeconomic landscape. Our continuing investment in U.S.-based manufacturing, together with our laser focus on innovation and service, is supporting improved sales momentum. Notwithstanding the current economic headwinds, we continue to push forward with multiple initiatives to expand our market penetration and strengthen our product portfolio.”

Mr. Gould added, “Our financial strength provides a solid foundation during uncertain times and allows us to return capital to stockholders through regular quarterly cash dividends and stock repurchases of $9.2 million during the first six months of fiscal 2027. Lastly, I would like to thank QEP’s Associates for their hard work and incredible commitment to our customers.”

Gross profit for the first six months of fiscal 2027 was $42.7 million compared to $43.3 million in the corresponding fiscal 2026 period, down $0.6 million or 1.4%. Gross profit for the second quarter of fiscal 2027 was $20.9 million compared to $20.6 million for the second quarter of fiscal 2026, up $0.3 million or 1.5%. As a percentage of net sales, gross margin for the first six months and second quarter of fiscal 2027 was 35.0% and 34.2%, respectively, down from 36.3% and 35.7% in the same periods of the prior fiscal year. The decline in gross margins during the current fiscal year reflects the continued impact of higher tariff costs combined with more recent increases in fuel and other input costs. By comparison, the prior-year periods benefited from inventory purchased before the implementation of tariffs. Refunds of tariffs previously paid under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (“IEEPA”) were recognized in other income within operating expenses and did not affect reported gross profit or gross margins.

Operating expenses totaled $30.0 million and $13.5 million for the first six months and second quarter of fiscal 2027, respectively, or 24.6% and 22.1% of net sales in those periods, compared to $32.9 million and $16.0 million, respectively, or 27.6% and 27.8% of net sales in the comparable fiscal 2026 periods. Other income, within operating expenses, includes $5.7 million and $4.8 million, respectively, of IEEPA tariff refunds previously paid and recognized as expense. Excluding these refunds, operating expenses increased compared with the prior-year periods, primarily due to higher shipping, general and administrative, and selling and marketing expenses.

Interest income was $0.7 million and $0.5 million for the first six months and second quarter of fiscal 2027, compared to $0.4 million and $0.2 million for the comparable fiscal 2026 periods. Included in both current year periods were $0.3 million in interest income related to the IEEPA tariff refunds.

The provision for income taxes as a percentage of income before taxes was 26.0% for all periods presented.

Net income from continuing operations for the first six months and second quarter of fiscal 2027 was $9.9 million and $5.8 million, respectively, or $3.29 and $1.97, respectively, per diluted share. For the comparable periods of fiscal 2026, net income from continuing operations was $8.0 million and $3.5 million, respectively, or $2.45 and $1.09, respectively, per diluted share.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) from continuing operations for the first six months and second quarter of fiscal 2027 were $13.6 million and $7.9 million, respectively, or 11.2% and 12.9% of net sales. This compares to EBITDA of $11.1 million and $5.0 million, or 9.3% and 8.6% of net sales for the corresponding periods of fiscal 2026. Fiscal 2027 EBITDA includes refunds of IEEPA tariffs previously paid and recognized as expenses of $5.7 million for the first six months and $4.8 million for the second quarter. Management does not expect these refunds to be indicative of ongoing operating results.
