Key Terms

real estate investment trust financial
A real estate investment trust (REIT) is a company that owns and manages income-producing properties—like apartment buildings, shopping centers, offices, or warehouses—and is required to pass most of its rental income to shareholders as dividends. Think of it as a shared property owner: instead of buying a whole building, investors buy a slice of a portfolio that pays regular income and can offer exposure to property values and rental markets without direct management. REITs matter to investors for predictable income, diversification, and liquidity compared with owning physical real estate.
assets under management financial
Assets under management (AUM) is the total value of all the investments that a financial company or fund is responsible for overseeing on behalf of its clients. It’s like a big bucket that shows how much money the firm is managing for people or organizations. A higher AUM often indicates a larger, more trusted company, and it can influence how much money they earn and the services they can offer.
alternative asset management financial
Alternative asset management is the business of selecting and overseeing investments that lie outside mainstream stocks and bonds — things like real estate, private companies, hedge funds, commodities, infrastructure, or collectibles. For investors it matters because these assets can behave differently than public markets, acting like a separate lane in a portfolio that can reduce overall risk, boost returns, or provide income, but they often come with higher fees, less transparency and lower liquidity (harder to sell quickly).
transferable shares of beneficial interest financial
A transferable share of beneficial interest is a tradable ownership unit that gives its holder the economic rights to a pool of assets or income (for example, the right to receive dividends or profit) without holding the legal title to the underlying property. For investors it matters because these shares let you buy or sell a claim on income or assets—similar to owning the fruit from a tree without owning the tree itself—so they affect liquidity, potential income, and how value is priced and taxed.
