TYSONS, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- TEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA) today announced that KUSA (Denver, Colo.) and KVUE (Austin, Texas) received 2024 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards which honor excellence in broadcast, online and documentary journalism. KUSA won for “BURNED,” a year-long project to document the devastating 2021 Marshall Fire in Boulder County. KVUE was honored for “Accountability After Uvalde,” revealing the failures of law enforcement in the aftermath of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.

“Through impactful investigative reporting, our local journalists continue to hold those in power accountable and create change in their communities,” said Lynn Beall, EVP and COO for media operations, TEGNA. “Congratulations to the teams at KUSA and KVUE for these well-earned honors.”

BURNED” – In this year-long project, KUSA’s executive producer Chris Hansen and executive producer and investigative reporter Chris Vanderveen, along with KUSA photojournalists, producers, reporters, digital, design and graphic designers, led a year-long effort to document the Marshall Fire’s destructive path. Gathering hundreds of cell phone videos and security footage, the team produced a series of revealing reports, a documentary and an interactive website showing exactly how the fire started and why a warning system failed. Launched days after the fire burned more than a thousand homes and killed two in Boulder County, “BURNED” sought to better understand how a small, seemingly inconsequential fire exploded into a monster on the second-to-last day of 2021. "BURNED" is also the recipient of two National Edward R. Murrow Awards in the digital and documentary categories.

"Accountability After Uvalde" – In this reporting, KVUE and Austin-American Statesman reporter Tony Plohetski pierced the false narrative of law enforcement heroism during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Plohetski uncovered the 77-minutes that law enforcement delayed action, which led to greater accountability including a Department of Justice review that condemned their inaction. Plohetski was supported by KVUE staffers Laura Sather, Luke Smith, Mary Posani, Lauren Petterson, Kaolin Sewell, Heikki Mustonen, Scott Guest, Joe Ellis, Andrew McKibbin, and Christina Ginn.
