Analysis

The stock moved +7.6% in the session following this news. A strong positive reaction aligns with the DOE selecting USAR for up to $19.3 million in funding toward a $50.5 million pilot REE separations project. Historically, USAR’s stock often weakened after constructive news, including grants and strategic updates, so this 13.05% gain marked a departure from that pattern. Investors later weighed execution risks, negotiation outcomes with DOE, and broader financing needs when assessing durability of the move.

Pattern Detected

Recent USAR-related headlines, including grants and strategic developments, were followed by modest to sharp declines, suggesting a pattern where positive news has not consistently translated into sustained gains.

Recent Company History

Over the past weeks, USAR reported Q1 2026 results with significant financing and an acquisition, received a $14.2M Texas grant for Round Top, and advanced merger and governance steps via multiple SEC filings. Despite these seemingly constructive milestones, prior 24‑hour reactions were negative, including a -7.76% move after its earnings date announcement. Today’s DOE funding selection contrasts with that pattern, coinciding with a strong pre‑news uptrend and a 13.05% gain.

2 terms
rare earth element technical
"pilot-scale rare earth element (“REE”) separations project advancing domestic processing"
A rare earth element is one of a set of 17 metallic chemical elements used as essential ingredients in many high-tech products, from smartphones and electric motors to wind turbines and defense systems. Investors care because these metals are critical inputs whose limited, geographically concentrated supply and complex extraction processes can drive price swings and create strategic risks or advantages for companies that mine them or depend on them—like a key spice that can make or break a recipe.
critical materials technical
"under DOE’s “Critical Materials Innovation, Efficiency and Alternatives” program"
Materials that are essential for making modern products—such as certain metals, minerals and chemical components used in batteries, electronics, energy and defense—whose supply is limited, concentrated or vulnerable to disruption. They matter to investors because shortages, price swings or policy changes around these inputs can raise costs, delay production and reshape profit outlooks for companies the way a grocery shortage affects a restaurant’s ability to operate.

Up to $19.3 million in federal funding to support pilot-scale rare earth element separation development

STILLWATER, Okla., May 21, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- USA Rare Earth, Inc. (Nasdaq: USAR) (“USAR” or the “Company”) today announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (“DOE”) has selected it to receive up to $19.3 million in funding, subject to final negotiation, under DOE’s “Critical Materials Innovation, Efficiency and Alternatives” program. The award will support the development of a pilot-scale rare earth element (“REE”) separations project advancing domestic processing capacity for materials essential to U.S. energy, defense and advanced manufacturing supply chains.

Rare earth separations represent one of the most concentrated choke points in the global critical minerals ecosystem. Building domestic capability is essential to the long-term resilience of U.S. economic and national security. The project will advance essential technology for processing REEs from domestic resources and specifically support the development of pre-commercial separations capacity in the United States. Final project scope, budget and timeline will be determined through negotiations with DOE.

“We are honored to be selected by the Department of Energy under its critical materials innovation program,” said Barbara Humpton, Chief Executive Officer of USA Rare Earth. “This selection is an important validation of our team’s cutting edge work to build a resilient rare earth value chain. We look forward to collaborating with DOE to define and execute a program that delivers maximum value for U.S. supply chain security, as we continue to build the global leader in rare earths.”

The total project value is approximately $50.5 million, including up to $19.3 million in DOE funding and $31.2 million in non-DOE funding. Final amounts will be set in the negotiated award.

Selection for award negotiations does not constitute a binding commitment of federal funding. Any award is subject to successful completion of negotiations with DOE and the execution of a definitive funding agreement.
