Verizon (NYSE: VZ) announces relief measures for customers affected by Southern California wildfires and windstorms. The company is waiving domestic call, text, and data usage charges from January 9-18, 2025, for both prepaid and postpaid customers in six affected counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura.

For prepaid customers using Verizon's subsidiary brands (Straight Talk, Tracfone, Total Wireless, Simple Mobile, Walmart Family Mobile, Net10, GoSmart, and Page Plus), service end dates are being extended to January 18, 2025. The company is also deploying portable generators to address service interruptions caused by wildfire conditions and Public Safety Power Shutoffs in the Los Angeles area.

The relief applies automatically to consumer and small business customers with 50 lines or less, with no action required from customers. Those whose billing cycles have already closed will receive automatic credits.

Verizon has announced its response to multiple wildfires in Southern California, including the Palisades, Eaton, Hurst, and Woodley fires. The company is offering unlimited call/text/data services to customers in the hardest-hit areas and has deployed free Wi-Fi and charging stations at three community locations.

The company's network infrastructure includes backup power solutions and redundancy measures across critical sites. Verizon maintains a fleet of over 550 mobile assets and nearly 300 satellite-based assets ready for rapid deployment. The Verizon Frontline Crisis Response Team provided support to fire response operations, delivering nearly 2,000 solutions to fire camps across 14 states in 2024. The team responded to more than 1,500 requests from nearly 850 different agencies in 46 states throughout the year.

Verizon has achieved a breakthrough in mobile technology, reaching 5.5 Gbps download speeds in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and MediaTek. This achievement was made possible through carrier aggregation technology, combining six separate channels of sub 6 GHz spectrum for enhanced data transmission efficiency.

The advancement comes in response to evolving customer needs, as mobile data traffic is projected to increase more than fourfold by 2030, exceeding 5,400 exabytes. The speed achievement demonstrates Verizon's capability to support emerging trends in mobile consumption, including video calls replacing traditional voice calls, streaming entertainment, cloud gaming, and 5G private networks for factory operations.

To put the speed in perspective, 5.5 Gbps allows downloading 266 Taylor Swift albums per minute or streaming 3,056 Hulu episodes per hour.

Verizon Business has been selected by the U.S. Air Force to implement 5G and 4G LTE network enhancements across 35 Air Force installations throughout the United States. This marks Verizon's 7th successful OTL (Offer to Lease) win out of 8 attempts, expanding their services to over 85% of U.S. Air Force Bases.

The network upgrades will include C-Band carrier additions, new macro builds, and small cells across bases in 25 states. These improvements will deliver higher speeds, increased bandwidth, and lower latency for base personnel and surrounding communities. The project builds on Verizon's previous OTL wins in 2019, 2021, and 2023, bringing their total coverage to 72 Air Force bases.

The implementation will support critical military applications including flight line test equipment, animated simulation and training, telemedicine with high-definition video capabilities, and AI-powered biometric identification.
