How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

On credit quality, the third-quarter 30-plus-day delinquency rate rose to 3.41% from 3.13% in Q2, while the net charge-off rate fell to 2.73% from 3.23%, leaving the two indicators moving in opposite directions.

Adjusted diluted EPS financial
"Adjusted diluted EPS (non-GAAP)"
Adjusted diluted EPS is a company’s profit per share after adding back or removing one-time items (like restructuring costs or gains) and dividing by the number of shares including potential shares from options and convertible securities. Investors use it as a cleaner view of ongoing earnings—like looking at a car’s regular fuel efficiency rather than a trip boosted by downhill coasting—to judge underlying performance and compare companies without temporary distortions.
Pre-provision earnings financial
"Pre-provision earnings is a non-GAAP metric"
Pre-provision earnings, often called pre-provision net revenue (PPNR), measures a bank’s recurring operating income before accounting for loan-loss provisions and certain one-time items. It is calculated as net interest income plus noninterest income minus noninterest (operating) expenses and taxes, so it reflects the core revenue available to absorb credit losses but does not include the cost of expected or actual loan write-downs. Because it omits provisions for bad loans, it shows operating performance but can overstate a lender’s true capacity to absorb credit deterioration.
Net charge-offs financial
"Net charge-offs of $3.1 billion"
Net charge-offs are the amount of loans or credit a lender removes from its books as uncollectible after subtracting any money later recovered from previously written-off accounts. Think of it like a store writing off unpaid tabs but getting back a few dollars later — the net figure shows the real loss. Investors watch this to judge a lender’s loan quality, future profits and how much capital may be needed to cover bad debts.
Common equity Tier 1 capital ratio financial
"Common equity Tier 1 capital ratio under Basel III Standardized Approach"
A bank’s common equity tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio measures the size of its strongest loss-absorbing capital—mainly common shares and retained earnings—relative to the bank’s assets after adjusting those assets for how risky they are (riskier loans count more). Think of it as the safety cushion compared with the weight of risky business; investors use it to judge a bank’s ability to survive losses, meet rules, and sustain dividends or growth.
Allowance coverage ratio financial
"Allowance coverage ratio"
A measure of how large a company’s reserve for expected losses is compared with the amount of problem assets (like bad loans or overdue receivables) on its books. Think of it as a rainy‑day fund compared with the size of known leaks: a higher ratio means the company has set aside more cushion to absorb losses, which matters to investors because it signals how well the firm can withstand credit losses without damaging earnings or capital.

Table 5: Notes to Financial Summary, Selected Metrics and Consolidated Financial Statements (Tables 1—4)

(1)Total net revenue was reduced by $784 million in Q3 2026, $898 million in Q2 2026, $980 million in Q1 2026, $941 million in Q4 2025 and $869 million in Q3 2025 for credit card finance charges and fees charged off as uncollectible.
(2)Dividends and undistributed earnings allocated to participating securities and earnings per share are computed independently for each period. Accordingly, the sum of each quarterly amount may not agree to the year-to-date total. We also provide adjusted diluted earnings per share, which is a non-GAAP measure. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for additional information on our non-GAAP measures.
(3)Tangible book value per common share is a non-GAAP measure calculated based on TCE divided by common shares outstanding. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for additional information on non-GAAP measures.
(4)Total net revenue margin is calculated based on annualized total net revenue for the period divided by average interest-earning assets for the period.
(5)Net interest margin is calculated based on annualized net interest income for the period divided by average interest-earning assets for the period.
(6)Return on average assets is calculated based on annualized net income (loss) less annualized income (loss) from discontinued operations, net of tax, for the period divided by average total assets for the period.
(7)Return on average tangible assets is a non-GAAP measure calculated based on annualized net income (loss) less annualized income (loss) from discontinued operations, net of tax, for the period divided by average tangible assets for the period. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for additional information on non-GAAP measures.
(8)Return on average common equity is calculated based on annualized net income (loss) available to common stockholders less annualized income (loss) from discontinued operations, net of tax, for the period, divided by average common equity. Our calculation of return on average common equity may not be comparable to similarly-titled measures reported by other companies.
(9)Return on average tangible common equity is a non-GAAP measure calculated based on annualized net income (loss) available to common stockholders less annualized income (loss) from discontinued operations, net of tax, for the period, divided by average TCE. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for additional information on non-GAAP measures.
(10)Efficiency ratio is calculated based on total non-interest expense for the period divided by total net revenue for the period. We also provide an adjusted efficiency ratio, which is a non-GAAP measure. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for additional information on our non-GAAP measures.
(11)Operating efficiency ratio is calculated based on operating expense for the period divided by total net revenue for the period. We also provide an adjusted operating efficiency ratio, which is a non-GAAP measure. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for additional information on our non-GAAP measures.
(12)Net charge-off rate is calculated based on annualized net charge-offs for the period divided by average loans held for investment for the period.
(13)Capital ratios as of the end of Q3 2026 are preliminary and therefore subject to change. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for information on the calculation of each of these ratios.
(14)TCE ratio is a non-GAAP measure calculated based on TCE divided by tangible assets. See “Table 15: Calculation of Regulatory Capital Measures and Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures” for additional information on non-GAAP measures.
(15)On December 18, 2025, after giving effect to the Discover Card Execution Note Trust (“DCENT”) Defeasance Amendments, Funding, as Beneficiary on behalf of DCENT, defeased the outstanding DiscoverSeries Class A(2021-2) Notes, Class A(2023-1) Notes, and Class A(2023-2) Notes (collectively, the “Class A Notes”) issued by DCENT.

Table 14: Notes to Net Interest Margin, Loan, Allowance and Business Segment Disclosures (Tables 6—13)

(1)Average yield is calculated based on annualized interest income for the period divided by average loans during the period. Average yield is calculated using whole dollar values for average balances and interest income/expense. Accordingly, total interest earning assets less total interest bearing liabilities may not total net interest income/spread.
(2)Includes amounts related to entities that provide capital to low-income and rural communities of $2.8 billion in Q3 2026, $2.4 billion in Q2 2026, $2.1 billion in Q3 2025 and $2.5 billion for the first nine months of 2026 and $2.1 billion for the first nine months of 2025. Related interest expense was $10 million in Q3 2026, $9 million in Q2 2026, $8 million in Q3 2025 and $27 million for the first nine months of 2026 and $23 million for the first nine months of 2025.
(3)Effective in the second quarter of 2026, Domestic Card results include Brex and our legacy corporate card product.
(4)Nonperforming loan rates are calculated based on nonperforming loans for each category divided by period-end total loans held for investment for each respective category. For Commercial Banking, loans categorized as nonperforming are considered criticized nonperforming.
(5)Nonperforming assets consist of nonperforming loans, repossessed assets and other foreclosed assets. The total nonperforming asset rate is calculated based on total nonperforming assets divided by the combined period-end total loans held for investment, repossessed assets and other foreclosed assets.
(6)Primarily represents foreign currency translation adjustments.
(7)Some of our commercial investments generate tax-exempt income, tax credits or other tax benefits. Accordingly, we present our Commercial Banking revenue and yields on a taxable-equivalent basis, calculated using a blended federal and state statutory tax rate, with offsetting reductions to the Other category.
(8)Includes the impact of $47 million and $96 million in Brex integration expenses in Q3 2026 and Q2 2026, respectively.
(9)Total net revenue margin is calculated based on annualized total net revenue for the period divided by average interest-earning assets for the period.
(10)Purchase volume consists of purchase transactions, net of returns, for the period, and excludes cash advance and balance transfer transactions.
(11)Percentages represent period-end loans held for investment in each credit score category. Domestic Card credit scores generally represent FICO scores. These scores are obtained from one of the major credit bureaus at origination and are refreshed monthly thereafter. We approximate non-FICO credit scores to comparable FICO scores for consistency purposes. Balances for which no credit score is available or the credit score is invalid are included in the 660 or below category. Corporate cards do not have FICO scores associated with such loans and therefore are excluded.
(12)Percentages represent period-end loans held for investment in each credit score category. Auto credit scores generally represent average FICO scores obtained from three credit bureaus at the time of application and are not refreshed thereafter. Balances for which no credit score is available or the credit score is invalid are included in the 620 or below category.
(13)Criticized exposures correspond to the “Special Mention,” “Substandard” and “Doubtful” asset categories defined by bank regulatory authorities.
(14)Includes the impact of $338 million, $298 million, $415 million, $352 million and $348 million in Discover integration expenses in Q3 2026, Q2 2026, Q1 2026, Q4 2025 and Q3 2025, respectively, as well as any charges incurred as a result of other restructuring activities for the periods presented.

Reconciliation of Non-GAAP Measures

The following non-GAAP measures consist of our adjusted results that we believe help investors and users of our financial information understand the effect of adjusting items on our selected reported results, however, they may not be comparable to similarly-titled measures reported by other companies. These adjusted results provide alternate measurements of our operating performance, both for the current period and trends across multiple periods.
