Rhea-AI Filing Summary

M&T Bank Corporation will revise its other-income categories effective for the third quarter of 2026. It says the changes will not affect total other income, income before taxes, net income or earnings per common share. Trust and investment services income will primarily comprise trust and brokerage income; card revenues will primarily comprise credit-card interchange and merchant discount revenue, plus debit-card interchange formerly included in service charges. Capital markets and advisory revenues will include trading-account and other non-hedging derivative gains, as well as loan syndication, underwriting and advisory fees. Mortgage banking revenues and gains or losses on bank investment securities will be unchanged.

M&T will separately present loans held for sale from loans held for investment in its balance sheet and average-balance disclosures. Annualized taxable-equivalent rates for impacted loan categories and certain loan-based credit-quality ratios will exclude loans held for sale. The unaudited historical schedules apply the new presentation retrospectively and are for illustrative purposes. For the three months ended June 30, 2026, they show net income of $818 million, net interest income of $1,792 million and total other income of $740 million.

Positive

  • Second-quarter net income rose to $818 million from $716 million in 2025.

Negative

  • None.

Filing Explained

Separately, in connection with a new general-ledger platform implemented during the second quarter of 2026, M&T revised how it calculates annualized taxable-equivalent rates for certain assets and liabilities, including some average deposit balances; earlier figures were adjusted to conform to the revised presentation.

taxable-equivalent rates financial
"annualized taxable-equivalent rates for each impacted loan category"
loans held for sale financial
"separately presenting loans held for sale from loans held for investment"
Loans held for sale are loans a bank or lender has made but intends to sell to another investor rather than keep on its books. Think of it like a shop buying products specifically to resell: the practice shows how active the lender is in originating loans, affects near-term cash flow and profit prospects, and signals how much credit risk the lender plans to transfer off its balance sheet—information investors use to assess liquidity, earnings volatility and risk exposure.
net interest spread financial
"Net interest spread"
Net interest spread is the difference between the average interest a lender or bank earns on loans and investments and the average interest it pays to depositors and creditors. Think of it like the gap between the price you charge for something and the cost you pay to obtain it; a wider gap means more income left over to cover expenses and profit. Investors watch this number because it signals how easily a financial firm can make money from its core lending business and how sensitive that income is to changing interest rates.
allowance for loan losses financial
"Allowance for loan losses to total loans"
Allowance for loan losses is money set aside by a bank to cover potential losses if some loans don’t get repaid. It helps the bank stay prepared for bad debts, much like setting aside savings for unexpected expenses. This ensures the bank remains stable even if some borrowers can’t pay back their loans.
