About SK hynix Inc.

Technology · NASDAQ

SK hynix Inc. (Nasdaq: SKHY) is one of the world's largest memory semiconductor companies, engaged in the design, manufacture and sale of DRAM and NAND flash memory. The company is headquartered in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, and its memory products are used in graphics cards, personal computers, data center servers, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, and other consumer electronics. Its common shares are listed on the KRX KOSPI Market of the Korea Exchange under the identification code 000660, and are also listed on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange in the form of global depositary shares under the symbol HYNSE, each representing one common share. Its American depositary shares, evidenced by American depositary receipts (ADRs), trade on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol SKHY, with each ADS representing one-tenth of a common share.

SK hynix describes itself as a global leader in the market for high bandwidth memory (HBM), the stacked DRAM used alongside GPUs and AI accelerators. Alongside memory, it operates a foundry business through the wholly owned subsidiaries SK hynix system ic Inc. and SK keyfoundry Inc., which produce non-memory semiconductors designed by customers.

Product portfolio

SK hynix sells DRAM and NAND flash memory in a range of configurations, architectures and performance characteristics tailored to application- and customer-specific needs. Its DRAM lines span server memory modules for data centers, graphics memory covering both HBM and GDDR products for GPUs and graphics cards, mobile memory in low-power LPDDR configurations for smartphones and tablets, PC memory, and consumer memory for devices across robotics, mobility and industrial automation. The company also supplies SOCAMM, a compact low-power DRAM module designed for AI servers.

In NAND flash memory, a non-volatile technology that retains data when power is removed, SK hynix manufactures primarily in triple-level cell and quad-level cell formats and continues to raise the number of vertically stacked layers per device. Product formats include enterprise SSDs, consumer SSDs, Universal Flash Storage, eMMC and multi-chip packages, with enterprise drives reaching far higher capacities than retail models.

High bandwidth memory and AI infrastructure

HBM connects multiple vertically stacked memory dies using through-silicon via (TSV) packaging, which forms microscopic holes through the silicon and links the layers with vertical electrodes. Because HBM sits very close to the processor, it provides a wide data pathway and a short communication distance, which makes it well suited to GPUs, AI workloads and high-performance computing. Buyers of HBM typically require suppliers to pass rigorous testing and approval processes and to co-develop configurations that match their own product roadmaps. SK hynix develops successive HBM generations, works with customers on qualification and configuration requirements, and pursues multi-year supply agreements with key customers to stabilize volumes on both sides.

The company treats HBM, server DRAM and enterprise SSDs as high-value products, and regards strength in those categories as a way to soften the cyclicality that has historically characterized memory pricing.

Manufacturing footprint

SK hynix owns and operates wafer fabrication facilities in Icheon and Cheongju in Korea and in Wuxi and Dalian in China. It also owns and operates assembly and testing facilities for back-end processing in Icheon and Cheongju in Korea and in Chongqing, China. Older fabs are periodically phased out or upgraded to more advanced processing technologies as part of the effort to lower unit manufacturing costs and improve yields.

Memory manufacturing requires large capital commitments and long facility lead times, and SK hynix invests in both wafer fabrication and advanced packaging capacity.

Customers and end markets

SK hynix serves a global customer base of manufacturers and original equipment manufacturers of consumer electronics, AI accelerators, communications equipment, PCs, servers and workstations. A limited number of customers located in the United States and China account for a substantial portion of its sales. Sales outside Korea run primarily through overseas subsidiaries located in the United States, Europe, China, Japan, India, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong, which sell directly to customers, with semiconductor distributors used where the customer base and geography make that more practical. Quantities and pricing are generally agreed at the time of purchase in light of market conditions and demand.

Competition and industry dynamics

The memory semiconductor market is intensely competitive and has been marked by erosion of selling prices, frequent product enhancements driven by technology change and relatively short product life cycles. In DRAM, SK hynix competes principally with Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology and CXMT. In NAND flash memory, its principal competitors are Samsung Electronics, Kioxia, Micron Technology and Sandisk. Competitive position rests on pricing, manufacturing cost and yield, product availability, performance and reliability, the timely development of new products and processes, the ability to tailor designs to individual customers, delivery in volume, technical support and financial strength. Entry into the industry requires substantial capital expenditure and significant technological and manufacturing expertise.

Research, development and intellectual property

Research and development is centered on maintaining a technology lead in advanced memory, and the company's main research facilities are located in Icheon. Work covers advanced process development, circuit and layout design, manufacturing process enhancement, process integration, photo mask design and development, physical and electrical analysis, and simulation and modeling. SK hynix holds a large portfolio of patents, trademarks, copyrights and design rights in Korea and abroad, primarily covering semiconductors and semiconductor manufacturing processes, and it supplements internally developed technology with licensing and cross-licensing agreements with other manufacturers.

Corporate history and ownership

The company traces its origins to 1983, when its predecessor Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd. entered the memory semiconductor industry by building its first fab in Icheon. Hyundai Electronics Industries became a public company through an initial public offering and listing on the KRX KOSPI Market in December 1996, and acquired the memory semiconductor business of the LG Group in May 1999. After a sharp decline in global DRAM prices, the company underwent a corporate restructuring beginning in 2001 that included divestment of non-core businesses and a debt restructuring with its creditors. It changed its name to Hynix Semiconductor Inc. in March 2001 and was approved for disaffiliation from the former Hyundai Group in August 2001. In February 2012 the former creditors sold their remaining interest to SK Telecom Co., Ltd., and the company took its present name, SK hynix Inc., in March 2012. SK square Co., Ltd., an SK Group member demerged from SK Telecom in 2021, is required under Korean holding-company rules to maintain at least a 20% stake in SK hynix.

Investments and acquisitions

In October 2020 SK hynix agreed to acquire the NAND flash memory and storage business of Intel Corporation, including a NAND manufacturing facility in Dalian, China, along with NAND and SSD-related intellectual property and research personnel. It paid US$6.6 billion in December 2021 and US$2.2 billion in March 2025, and created a United States subsidiary that operates the acquired business under the Solidigm brand, which develops quad-level cell NAND technology and high-end enterprise SSDs. The company acquired SK keyfoundry in August 2022 to expand its foundry business and 8-inch foundry capacity, and in March 2025 it folded its CMOS image sensor unit into its AI memory operations. It also takes selective minority equity positions in other industry participants.

United States listing and reporting status

SK hynix listed American depositary shares in the United States in July 2026, with when-issued trading beginning on July 10, 2026 and regular way trading under the symbol SKHY beginning on July 13, 2026. The offering of 177,900,000 ADSs was priced at US$149.00 per ADS, for a total ADR offering amount of approximately US$26.5 billion. As a foreign private issuer, the company files annual reports on Form 20-F and furnishes current reports on Form 6-K, prepares its consolidated financial statements under K-IFRS, and is exempt from the proxy statement rules and from the insider reporting and short-swing profit provisions that apply to domestic United States registrants.
