The AI Story Has Flipped From Boom to Bubble 26 Times

A coin caught mid-flip above a wet dark surface, one face a glowing circuit-etched chip and the other an iridescent soap-bubble film, with blurred after-images of many spins

Since 2023, in our record of 67 market headlines from eight large news outlets that credited or blamed AI for that day’s move, the AI story has flipped from boom to bubble or back 26 times, and every one of them is listed below. When the market rises it gets called an AI boom, and when it pulls back it gets called AI fear. There is always a pretext at hand, and the flips come faster and on smaller moves than most readers would guess. Figures run to the October 9, 2026 close, and we will update them.

In our record of 67 headlines from eight outlets, the AI story flipped 26 times, a median of 20 days from one flip to the next, and on most of the sessions the Nasdaq-100 moved less than 1.5%. Figures from StockTitan price data, QQQ, and our headline record, as of October 9, 2026.

There is always a pretext

In our record the label follows the day’s direction almost without exception, since 20 of the 21 boom sessions were up days for the Nasdaq-100 fund QQQ and all 24 bubble sessions were down days.

Every flip also came with a reason attached, and the reasons are almost interchangeable. A results report can start a boom or a bubble. So can a new AI model, a big spending number, a comment from a bank chief executive, or a single report about one private company’s revenue. When the price moves, one of these is usually close at hand, and in this record the label matched the direction of the day in 44 of 45 sessions.

The examples are easy to list. A model from the Chinese start-up DeepSeek knocked chip stocks down in January 2025, and Alphabet’s Gemini 3 model was credited with a rally in November 2025 (announced before the selloff it was said to reverse). Oracle’s $523 billion of contracted but undelivered revenue in December 2025, set against $20.5 billion of capital spending in six months, became a bubble story. Two reports about OpenAI’s revenue produced a bubble day on October 8, 2026 and a boom day on October 9.

The 26 flips of the AI story, in twelve chapters. Our record includes six flips in June 2026 alone, while uneven coverage across the years means it cannot show whether the story sped up.

Faster than you would guess

The story changed direction 26 times across 45 trading sessions in our record, a median of 20 days from one flip to the next, and in bursts it turned far faster. January 2025 had three flips in five sessions. June 2026 had six in just over three weeks: a boom on June 1, a chip selloff on June 5, AI stocks recovering on June 8, the selloff resuming on June 9, a comeback on June 18 and a global tech rout on June 23. The most recent pair came on consecutive days in October 2026.

The swings reach further in markets built on the same chips. South Korea’s KOSPI, home to the memory makers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, closed at 9,114.55 on June 22, 2026 and fell 10% the next day, according to the Bank of Korea.

Smaller moves than the headlines suggest

Most of these days were ordinary days for the market. On 25 of the 45 sessions in our record, QQQ, the fund that tracks the Nasdaq-100, moved less than 1.5% in StockTitan’s price data. "AI bubble fears fade" on October 9, 2026 came with a 0.49% gain. One headline, "Wall St extends AI-led rally" on February 23, 2024, was written while trading was still under way, and QQQ closed that day 0.29% lower.

The same strong words get used for big days and small ones alike, so a "frenzy" came with a 2.93% rise in February 2024 and, in a Reuters headline, fears that "hammer Nvidia, chipmakers" with a 0.80% fall in September 2026. In our reading, that gap between the size of the words and the size of the move is the clearest sign that many of these flips are commentary on the mood, more than news about the industry.

The same company, both stories

Nvidia has been both stories, sometimes on the same news. Its forecast in May 2023 sent the shares up 24% in a day and started the first AI rally. Three months later it reported $13.51 billion of revenue, beating its own forecast of $11.00 billion, the shares barely moved and the closing headline said the "Nvidia-led rally fizzles". It reported record revenue again in February 2025 and February 2026, and both times the stock fell the next day.

Others got the same treatment. Broadcom said in June 2026 that its AI chip revenue had come in "above our forecast", and its shares fell 13% the next session. The OpenAI deals of autumn 2025, in which Nvidia said it would invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and AMD gave OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million shares, were cheered as proof of demand, and in our reading they also carry the bubble case, since in both the supplier puts money or shares toward its own customer. On November 20, 2025 a single session opened with a relief rally on Nvidia’s results and closed with what CNBC called a "stunning reversal".

Why the story keeps flipping

Closing headlines explain sessions that have already ended, and earlier reports describe trading still under way. Bloomberg’s October 9, 2026 story still carries its morning wording in its web address, "US stocks set to rebound as oil slips, AI bubble fears recede", under a different headline written at the close. None of this makes the reporting wrong, because it describes what traders did, and economists saw the same thing long before AI. A 1988 study, "What Moves Stock Prices?", noted that "large market moves often occur on days without any identifiable major news releases".

There is a real uncertainty underneath. Nobody knows yet which companies will earn a return on the hundreds of billions going into AI, so every new data point gets read as a verdict. In our reading, though, 26 verdicts in under three and a half years, many of them on moves under 1.5% and some reversed the next morning, have become hard to take seriously one at a time. The slower, duller evidence is in the companies’ own filings.

The reality check under the noise

The filings tell a steadier story than the headlines. We added up the operating profit, what a company earns from its business before interest, taxes and investment gains, of seven AI giants: Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Apple and Broadcom, company-wide. It rose from $349.5 billion in the twelve months reported before ChatGPT to $878.8 billion in the latest twelve months, and it was higher than a year earlier in every quarter from mid-2023 to mid-2026.

Their share prices rose faster. By our estimate their combined market value went from 21.8 times their yearly operating profit to 28.8 times, so the market now pays about a third more for each dollar of that profit than before ChatGPT. Nvidia and Amazon are the exceptions, with profits that grew faster than their shares, as the table shows.

Where the bubble risk sat in the dot-com era

The internet boom shows that a real technology and a painful bubble can come together. The Nasdaq Composite fell 77.9% from its March 2000 peak to its October 2002 low and took until April 2015 to close above that peak again, by our calculation from the daily closes. Telecom companies, in then Fed Governor Ben Bernanke’s words in a 2003 speech, "no doubt invested too much in long-haul fiber networks", and WorldCom, which the SEC said had overstated its income by about $7.2 billion, went into bankruptcy.

The dot-com bust, from the Nasdaq peak to its recovery. The Nasdaq Composite fell 77.9% from March 2000 to October 2002 and took until April 2015 to close above its old peak in price terms, while Amazon came through a share price low of $5.97.

2002-09-26The SEC charges a former WorldCom controller with fraud, and the company is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
2002-10-09The Nasdaq Composite closes at 1,114.11, its low for the bust.
2015-04-23The Nasdaq Composite closes at 5,056.06, above its 2000 peak for the first time.

Amazon is the other half. It lost $1.41 billion in 2000, according to its annual report for 2002, and traded as low as $5.97 in 2001, and today it is one of the seven companies above. The lesson of that era was never in the daily headlines. It was in who built too far ahead of demand, and today’s equivalent shows up in filings such as Amazon’s second-quarter 2026 release, where free cash flow over twelve months turned into an outflow of $7.6 billion as spending rose, an increase the company says "primarily reflects investments in artificial intelligence".

What the label is worth

Over the whole period the prices and the revenues went one way while the label kept changing. As of the October 9, 2026 close, QQQ sat 1.1% below its record close of October 6, and Nvidia, Apple and Microsoft were within 5% of their own records in StockTitan’s price data. Meta, Amazon and Alphabet were 8% to 13% below their highs, and Broadcom 25% below its June 2026 record, so not every name is at its peak. The seven companies’ combined revenue was 1.69 times its level before ChatGPT in the latest twelve months reported, by our addition of their filings.

In our reading, that makes the daily boom-or-bubble label stale as a guide. A story that reverses 26 times in a little over three years, often within days and on moves of less than 1.5%, tells a reader very little about where AI or these companies are heading. It mostly tells you which way the market closed. The question that matters, whether the hundreds of billions being spent will earn their keep, moves at the pace of quarterly filings. Those show rising combined operating profit, but company-wide figures like these do not settle whether the AI spending will earn an adequate return.

How we counted

We read 67 market headlines on their own pages, from Reuters (27, on Kitco’s copies of the wire), CNBC (22), CNN (6), Yahoo Finance (5), AP (3, on Yahoo Finance and PBS copies), CBS News (2), NPR (1) and Bloomberg (1). A headline counts when it credits AI, AI stocks, chips or an AI company for that day’s gains, or blames them, AI worries or AI disruption for that day’s losses. Retrospective features, milestone notes and headlines with no AI link are left out. The record is a sample found by searching, thin in 2023 and denser in 2025 and 2026, and several outlets refused automated reading.

Operating profit comes from each company’s SEC XBRL data, for example Nvidia’s, summed over the four quarters first reported before November 29, 2022 and the latest four. Market value is the share price from StockTitan’s data times the latest diluted share count in the filings, with two adjustments: for Alphabet’s 2022 value we used the shares outstanding on its balance sheet, and Nvidia’s and Broadcom’s 2022 counts are multiplied by 10 for their 2024 ten-for-one splits. The combined estimate for October 9, 2026 is within 1% of StockTitan’s market values. The seven companies are our selection. Our standards are in our editorial policy.

Frequently asked questions

How often has the AI stock story flipped between boom and bubble?

26 times in our record of 67 headlines from eight outlets since 2023, a median of 20 days from one flip to the next, with six flips in June 2026 alone. Every session is listed in the table above.

How big are the market moves behind AI boom and bubble headlines?

Often small. On 25 of the 45 sessions in our record, the Nasdaq-100 fund QQQ moved less than 1.5% either way.

Is AI a bubble in the stock market?

Nobody can say for certain while it is happening. The seven AI giants’ combined operating profit grew 2.5 times from before ChatGPT to the latest twelve months, and their market value grew 3.3 times, so prices ran ahead of profits for the group, though not for Nvidia or Amazon.

Where can I follow these companies on StockTitan?

Each company’s overview page on StockTitan, such as Nvidia’s, shows its price history next to its press releases, and the SEC filings feed lists quarterly results as they are filed.
