What Net Margin Means for Financial Services Companies

Net margin in financial services is calculated on the same mechanical basis as everywhere else, net income over revenue, but the economics underneath it differ sharply from industrial businesses. For banks, interest expense functions as the cost-of-goods equivalent, and provisions for credit losses act as a forward-looking cost line. For insurers, claims and reserves dominate the picture, and for asset managers, variable compensation tracks revenue closely. The resulting net margins tend to look unusually high by cross-sector comparison.

Why It Matters in Financial Services

A consistently strong net margin for a financial firm typically reflects efficient operations, disciplined credit underwriting, and favorable rate or fee positioning. It is worth noting that loan-loss provisions and mark-to-market on securities portfolios can swing reported net margin meaningfully from quarter to quarter, and that leverage is inherent to the business model here, so the same net margin supports very different returns on equity depending on the capital structure.

What to Read Alongside

Pair net margin with Revenue to calibrate scale, Gross Margin which is less meaningful here but still useful for context, and Return on Equity because returns on the capital base are the more standard financial-sector lens.

How this ranking is built

Companies are ranked by net margin as reported in their most recent annual filing with the SEC. Figures shown are in US dollars (or percent, as noted), rounded to two decimals.

  • Source: annual 10-K / 20-F filings from companies trading on US exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX).
  • Fiscal year: whichever annual period the company has most recently filed. Fiscal years don't always align with the calendar year, so the "as of FY" stamp above reflects the most common year across the table.
  • Filtered out: warrants, preferred shares, and duplicate listings that share a parent company's financials.
  • Size floor: A company qualifies at $1 billion in annual revenue or above, so a small filer with a freak ratio cannot top the list.
  • Value range: Only figures above 0% and up to 100% qualify.
  • Update cadence: refreshed as companies file new annual reports (typically within 60–90 days of fiscal year end).
