Key Terms

property & casualty financial
Property & casualty (P&C) is the part of the insurance industry that sells policies to protect physical assets like homes, cars, factories and the people or businesses that use them against damage, loss, or legal liability. It matters to investors because P&C insurers’ profits depend on how many claims occur, how costly they are, and how well companies price risk and manage reserves—similar to a homeowner balancing repair costs against the cost of a warranty.
third-party administration financial
Third-party administration is when an outside firm handles administrative tasks for benefit plans, insurance policies, or other corporate programs—things like processing claims, keeping records, and managing payments. Investors care because using a specialist can lower a company’s operating burden and costs, affect reported liabilities and cash flow, and introduce operational or compliance risk if the administrator makes errors; think of it like hiring a property manager to run an apartment complex instead of the owner doing every task.
loss adjusting financial
Loss adjusting is the independent assessment of an insurance claim to determine what caused the loss, how much damage occurred, and how much the insurer should pay. Investors care because these assessments directly affect an insurer’s reported liabilities and profits—accurate adjusting is like a detailed home inspection after a storm that prevents overpayment or unexpected shortfalls and therefore influences reserve levels and future earnings.
