| Nov 18 | Earnings date notice | Neutral | -4.1% | Announced Q3 2025 earnings release date and conference call logistics. |

Earnings and related updates have produced sizable but mixed reactions: a weak Q1 2025 saw a sharp -18.23% drop, while more constructive or mixed results in Q4 2024 and Q2 2025 coincided with gains of 6.32% and 5.52%. Occasionally, the stock has risen despite negative metrics, as in Q3 2024, showing that sentiment around this name can diverge from headline fundamentals.
Over the last year, Designer Brands has moved through a volatile earnings cycle. Q4 2024 results showed modest comparable sales improvement but a full-year net loss, followed by a challenging Q1 2025 with net sales down 8.0% and a net loss of $17.4M, which triggered guidance withdrawal and a sharp share-price decline. Q2 2025 brought mixed but improving trends with positive EPS and better comps, leading to a positive reaction. Today’s Q3 2025 release adds further gross-margin expansion, stronger EPS and a reinstated 2025 outlook, extending that sequential improvement narrative.
Market Pulse Summary
The stock is surging +33.4% following this news. A strong positive reaction aligns with the pattern of earnings being a major catalyst, as prior reports saw average moves of 8.47%. The Q3 2025 release combined higher EPS, a 45.1% gross margin and a reinstated $50M–$55M adjusted operating income outlook, against still-declining sales and comps. Investors would have weighed improving profitability and lower debt of $469.8M against ongoing demand softness when reassessing valuation.

"Stronger consumer demand and improved in-store execution drove improved comparable sales in the third quarter compared to the second quarter. Our team also delivered a meaningful increase in gross profit and diligently managed expenses, which helped drive an increase in operating income over last year."
Howe continued, "I'm encouraged that this positive momentum has extended into the early part of the fourth quarter, reinforcing the progress of our strategic initiatives and positioning us well as we close out the year. The Company expects the following for fiscal 2025:
Metric | 2025 Guidance | |
Designer Brands Net Sales | Down
Adjusted Operating Profit
Adjusted Income Tax Expense |
Forward-looking adjusted operating income excludes potential charges or gains that may be recorded during the fiscal year, including among other things restructuring costs, including severance charges, and impairment charges. Forward-looking adjusted income tax expense excludes the net tax impact of such items and the potential change in the valuation allowance on deferred tax assets. A reconciliation of these forward-looking non-GAAP amounts to the comparable GAAP measure is not provided, as permitted by Item 10(e)(1)(i)(B) of Regulation S-K, because the impact and timing of these potential charges or gains is inherently uncertain and difficult to predict and is unavailable without unreasonable efforts. In addition, the Company believes that such reconciliations would imply a degree of precision and certainty that could be confusing to investors. Such items are uncertain and could have a substantial impact on GAAP measures of our financial performance. For additional information regarding the use of non-GAAP measures, refer to the Non-GAAP Measures section below.
