“Advanced nuclear technologies are poised to play a critical role in meeting growing energy demand while supporting decarbonization goals,” said Pierre Bechelany, Fluor’s Business Group President of Energy Solutions. “The Cascade Advanced Energy Facility represents an important step forward in the deployment of next-generation nuclear energy. Fluor is proud to bring decades of nuclear expertise and project execution experience to support X-energy and its partners in advancing this innovative project.”
Under the agreement, Fluor will provide engineering, design development, supply chain, estimating and project controls services for the nuclear island scope of the facility. The project aims to incorporate X-energy’s Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology, with Fluor leveraging learnings from ongoing work with X-energy on its first Xe-100 project to advance project development, optimize execution planning and support critical investment decisions.
The Cascade Advanced Energy Facility is expected to deploy four Xe-100 reactors capable of generating approximately 320 megawatts of carbon-free electricity, with the potential to scale to a total of 12 units and 960 megawatts of generating capacity. It is the first project in X-energy’s effort to deploy 5 GW of new nuclear by 2039.
The award further strengthens Fluor’s relationship with X-energy and reinforces the company’s leadership in advanced nuclear energy. Earlier this year, Fluor announced a contract to provide similar services for X-energy’s proposed advanced nuclear project at Dow’s UCC Seadrift Operations in Texas. Taken together, these projects demonstrate growing momentum for next-generation nuclear technologies and Fluor’s role in helping clients deliver reliable, low-carbon energy solutions.

A small modular reactor is a compact nuclear power plant designed to generate electricity in smaller amounts compared to traditional reactors. It can be built in factories, then transported and assembled on-site, making it quicker and often cheaper to deploy. For investors, these reactors represent a potential source of clean energy with lower upfront costs and flexible scaling, which could influence future energy markets and infrastructure investments.
nuclear islandtechnical
The nuclear island is the safety-critical portion of a nuclear power plant that contains the nuclear reactor and the systems that control the fission reaction and carry heat away from the reactor core. It typically includes the reactor vessel, primary coolant piping, steam generators or heat exchangers (for pressurized-water designs), control and shutdown systems, and the containment structure that is designed to prevent release of radioactive material. The nuclear island is distinct from the turbine island and other non-nuclear plant equipment because it houses components subject to nuclear regulation and radiation protection controls.
high-temperature gas-cooled reactortechnical
A high-temperature gas-cooled reactor is a type of nuclear power plant that uses a gas (usually helium) to carry heat from a ceramic-based fuel core operating at much higher temperatures than conventional reactors. For investors, that higher-temperature design can mean greater efficiency, the ability to drive industrial processes (like hydrogen or steam production) in addition to electricity, and different safety and cost profiles that affect project economics, regulatory risk and market opportunities.
