Tune-Up Now to Protect Against Expensive Repairs When Cold Weather Hits

NORWALK, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- According to a recent Biannual State of the Home Survey, the most common home repair emergencies homeowners face are related to their home’s heating and air conditioning (HVAC) system. According to the survey, 18% of homeowners needed a HVAC repair in the prior 12 months, providing evidence of why a yearly tune-up is critical.

To highlight the importance of an annual HVAC tune-up, HomeServe reminds homeowners that September 25th is National Tune-Up Day. Established in 2014 and now in its 8th year, the day provides a reminder to homeowners about the importance of taking care of their heating system and the benefits of doing an annual tune-up before the heating season begins. By promoting National Tune-Up Day, which is recognized by the National Day Calendar, HomeServe hopes to help homeowners avoid costly repairs or even more expensive equipment replacement during the winter months.

“This year, the Farmer’s Almanac is calling for ‘notable polar coaster swings,’ which can take a tremendous toll on a home’s HVAC system,” said Tom Rusin, CEO, HomeServe North America. “To survive what is expected to be a difficult winter, homeowners need to ensure their HVAC systems are in top working order before the cold weather hits. And that’s exactly what a HVAC tune-up does. As part of an affordable and quick service visit, a qualified technician can ensure that all parts of the system are working properly and it will be ready to ramp up as the temperatures drop.”

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Energy’s Energy Star program recommend an annual tune-up for heating systems. Each year, carbon monoxide (CO) claims the lives of hundreds of people and makes thousands more ill because of CO exposure. The CDC recommends annual tune-ups to help reduce accidental CO exposure, along with the installation of CO detectors in the home.

Energy Star encourages annual tune-ups to improve the energy efficiency of home heating systems and reduce the cost of home heating. Approximately one-half of energy usage is dedicated to heating and cooling the home and neglecting a tune-up can force the system to labor harder and use more energy.

According to HomeServe data, the cost of a gas boiler or furnace tune-up ranges between $79 and $190 depending upon location, while common gas heating system repairs can range between $300 and $680. A tune-up can identify issues before they result in expensive repairs or a dangerous situation for your home and family. During a heating system tune-up, professional heating technicians typically have the following checklist:

  • Check safety systems and controls
  • Check/adjust thermostats
  • Check/adjust burners
  • Check/clean pilot
  • Check/clean gauge and flush low water cut-off
  • Check filters and belts
  • Check flue pipe and chimney draft
  • Check oil in motors and pumps
  • Check/clean blower assembly
  • Check condensate line, if applicable
