SHAH ALAM, Malaysia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- KKR, a leading global investment firm, and Avisena Healthcare (“Avisena”), a Malaysian healthcare provider, today announced that funds managed by KKR have entered into a definitive agreement to make a minority investment in Avisena. The investment will support Avisena’s next phase of growth, including the expansion of multi-specialty offerings at Avisena’s flagship hospitals in Shah Alam, and the build-out of new greenfield hospitals within the Klang Valley.

Founded in 1996, Avisena has built a leading healthcare presence in Shah Alam and the wider Klang Valley, Malaysia, where it operates Avisena Specialist Hospital and Avisena Specialist Hospital 2. Malaysia’s private healthcare market is experiencing growing demand, with capacity growth lagging demand in key urban areas.

SJ Lim, Managing Director at KKR, said, “We are honored and excited to be working with Avisena’s shareholders and its management team through this transaction. Avisena has built a differentiated healthcare platform serving the community for over 30 years, anchored by a strong commitment to delivering quality, accessible patient care. We look forward to contributing towards building the business and working together with the Avisena team.”

Elina Nadia Omar, Group Chief Executive Officer of Avisena Healthcare, said, “We are pleased to welcome KKR as an institutional investor as Avisena enters its next phase of growth. Over the past 30 years, we have built Avisena with a clear purpose – to make quality, compassionate and accessible healthcare available to the communities we serve. We believe KKR’s regional healthcare expertise and broader experience will support our efforts to expand our capabilities, strengthen our clinical offering, and deliver high-quality care to more patients. This strategic partnership marks an important milestone for Avisena and we look forward to building on our strong foundation and creating even greater impact in the years ahead.”

Since 2004, KKR has invested more than US$20 billion across the global healthcare ecosystem, working with healthcare businesses to support investment in clinical capabilities, technology and infrastructure and to expand access to high-quality care. Across Asia Pacific, KKR’s healthcare portfolio includes Medical Saigon Group in Vietnam and Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings, Inc. in the Philippines, and investments in healthcare businesses in India, Japan and China. In Malaysia, KKR’s investments have included OMS Group, Weststar Aviation, and Taylor’s Schools, reflecting its approach of being an engaged, value-added strategic partner alongside founders and management teams.

The investment is subject to fulfillment of customary closing conditions.

Key Terms

minority investment financial
A minority investment is when an investor buys less than half of a company's shares or voting rights, so they have a financial stake but not control over management or major decisions. It matters to investors because it offers potential upside from the company's growth without the responsibilities of running it, but also limits influence over strategy and exposes the investor to risks and exit constraints similar to being a passenger rather than the driver.
multi-specialty offerings medical
A suite of medical services, products, or care programs that spans multiple clinical specialties—for example cardiology, orthopedics, and primary care—offered together by a hospital, clinic network, managed-care plan, or product portfolio. Like a department store that carries different types of goods under one roof, multi-specialty offerings matter to investors because they can broaden the customer base and revenue sources, change capital and operating needs, and affect competitive positioning and regulatory exposure.
greenfield hospitals technical
Greenfield hospitals are medical facilities built entirely from scratch on undeveloped land rather than created by renovating or expanding existing buildings. For investors, they matter because they involve large upfront construction and permitting costs, longer lead times, and the chance to design modern layouts and technologies tailored to current needs, which can affect future operating costs, capacity and revenue potential.
institutional investor financial
Large organizations that buy, hold and manage stocks, bonds and other investments on behalf of clients such as pension funds, insurance companies, mutual funds, endowments or wealthy individuals. Think of them as the big buckets of money in the market whose buying or selling can move prices, signal confidence in a company, and affect access to financing or governance; their actions are closely watched by other investors for clues about market trends and risk.
