Key Terms

p&c technical
P&C stands for property and casualty insurance, the sector that protects physical assets (homes, cars, buildings) and pays for legal or repair costs when people or property are harmed. Investors watch P&C businesses because they generate steady premium income but face sudden, often large claims after accidents or disasters, so profitability can swing sharply—think of premiums as a safety net that can stretch or tear under big losses.
underwriting technical
Underwriting is the process where a financial institution agrees to buy and then resell new stocks or bonds to investors. It matters because it helps companies raise money quickly and smoothly, while the bank takes on the risk of selling those securities at the agreed price. Think of it like a booker guaranteeing to sell all tickets for a concert before opening the doors.

Eric Kappler

In this role, Kappler will lead Kemper’s unified P&C organization, including specialty personal and commercial vehicle lines, and P&C claims operations. He will report to Stephen J. McAnena, Kemper’s President and CEO. Kappler succeeds Matthew Hunton, who has left the company.

“Eric is an accomplished insurance executive with deep experience in our business and an impressive record of delivering results,” said McAnena. “As we execute against our strategic priorities, his leadership and experience will help us continue strengthening our business and positioning Kemper for long-term success. I look forward to welcoming him to our leadership team. I also want to thank Matt for his leadership and contributions to Kemper, and I wish him success in the future.”

Kappler brings more than two decades of leadership experience in the property and casualty insurance industry, including extensive expertise in the non-standard auto market. Most recently, he served as President of Bristol West Insurance, where he led a multibillion-dollar business and delivered strong underwriting and financial results by improving profitability, driving disciplined growth, expanding distribution capabilities, and investing in pricing, underwriting and digital innovation. Throughout his career, he has led large, complex organizations, developed long-term business strategies, built high-performing teams, and successfully navigated changing market conditions, making him well positioned to lead P&C.

"Kemper has a meaningful opportunity to build on its strengths, and I look forward to working with Steve and the P&C team to help move the business forward," said Kappler. "I have great respect for the people and experience across the organization, and I'm eager to get started in support of Kemper's agents and customers."
