Sentiment and the balance of points

Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.

How this balance works

Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.

It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.

Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

4 terms
net asset value financial
"preliminary estimate of net asset value ("NAV") per share"
Net asset value is the total value of an investment fund's assets minus any liabilities, divided by the number of shares or units outstanding. It represents the per-share worth of the fund, similar to how the value of a house is determined by its total worth after debts are subtracted. Investors use it to gauge the true value of their holdings and to compare different investment options.
View in glossary
sbic regulatory
"licensed as a Small Business Investment Company ("SBIC")"
A Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) is a privately managed investment fund licensed and regulated by the U.S. Small Business Administration to provide financing to small businesses, often combining private capital with government-backed leverage. Think of it as a lender or investor that gets a government-supported boost to extend credit to smaller firms; investors care because this structure can open access to niche growth opportunities while changing the risk and return profile through regulatory oversight and government support.
non-accrual status financial
"investments on non-accrual status comprised 0.9% of the total investment portfolio"
A loan or credit account is placed in non-accrual status when the lender stops recording expected interest income because the borrower is not making scheduled payments or repayment is doubtful. Think of it like a landlord who stops counting unpaid rent as future income once a tenant stops paying; it signals rising credit problems and potential losses. For investors, non-accrual levels indicate loan quality and can foreshadow write-downs, lower earnings, and increased risk to a lender’s balance sheet.
u.s. gaap financial
"in accordance with U.S. GAAP for the third quarter of 2026"
U.S. GAAP is a set of rules and standards that companies in the United States follow to prepare their financial reports. It helps ensure that financial information is consistent and clear, so investors and others can compare and understand a company's financial health easily.

Announces Third Quarter 2026 Earnings Release and Conference Call Schedule

HOUSTON, Oct. 15, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Main Street Capital Corporation (NYSE: MAIN) ("Main Street" or the "Company") is pleased to announce its preliminary operating results for the third quarter of 2026 and its third quarter 2026 earnings release and conference call schedule.

In commenting on the Company's preliminary operating results for the third quarter of 2026, Dwayne L. Hyzak, Main Street's Chief Executive Officer, stated, "We are pleased with our performance in the third quarter, which resulted in another quarter of strong operating results, including distributable net investment income before taxes that was in line with our expectations and prior guidance provided on our last conference call and an increase to our net asset value per share for the seventeenth consecutive quarter. We look forward to sharing the full details of our third quarter 2026 results in a few weeks."

Preliminary Estimates of Third Quarter 2026 Results

Main Street's preliminary estimate of third quarter 2026 net investment income ("NII") is $0.87 to $0.91 per share, distributable net investment income ("DNII")(1) is $0.94 to $0.98 per share and DNII before taxes(2) is $0.96 to $1.00 per share.

Main Street's preliminary estimate of net asset value ("NAV") per share as of September 30, 2026 is $34.18 to $34.26, representing an increase of $0.26 to $0.34 per share, or 0.8% to 1.0%, from the NAV per share of $33.92 as of June 30, 2026, with this increase after the impact of the supplemental dividend paid in September 2026 of $0.30 per share. The estimated NAV per share increase is primarily due to the net fair value appreciation on the investment portfolio, including realized and unrealized activity, and the accretive impact of equity issuances, partially offset by the total dividends per share paid in the third quarter in excess of NII per share and the net tax provision. The net fair value appreciation on the investment portfolio is primarily the result of net fair value appreciation on the lower middle market ("LMM") investment portfolio, private loan investment portfolio and other portfolio investments, partially offset by net fair value depreciation on the middle market investment portfolio and fair value depreciation of the wholly-owned external investment manager.

As a result of Main Street's preliminary estimates of NII, net fair value appreciation and the net tax provision as noted above, Main Street estimates that it generated an annualized return on equity of over 14% for the third quarter.(3)

Main Street preliminarily estimates that investments on non-accrual status comprised 0.9% of the total investment portfolio at fair value and 3.5% at cost as of September 30, 2026.

Additionally, during the quarter, Main Street Mezzanine Fund, LP, an investment fund wholly-owned by the Company and licensed as a Small Business Investment Company ("SBIC") by the U.S. Small Business Administration ("SBA"), received approval from the SBA to increase the borrowing capacity of its SBIC debentures by $75.0 million to $250.0 million. Combined with Main Street's other wholly-owned investment fund licensed as an SBIC, Main Street Capital III, LP, this gives Main Street access to $425.0 million of the recently increased $475.0 million of regulatory maximum SBIC debenture borrowing capacity for affiliated SBIC funds. Main Street expects to maintain SBIC debentures under the SBIC program in the future, subject to periodic repayments and borrowings, in an amount up to the regulatory maximum amount.

Investment Portfolio Activity

The Company's third quarter 2026 operating activities include the following investment activity in the LMM and private loan investment strategies:

  • $61.5 million in total LMM portfolio investments, which after aggregate repayments, return of invested equity capital and a decrease in cost basis due to a realized loss resulted in a net decrease of $19.4 million in the total cost basis of the LMM investment portfolio; and
  • $162.0 million in total private loan portfolio investments, which after aggregate repayments, return of invested equity capital and a decrease in cost basis due to realized losses resulted in a net decrease of $1.8 million in the total cost basis of the private loan investment portfolio.

Endnotes

(1)

DNII is NII as determined in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, or U.S. GAAP, excluding the impact of non-cash compensation expenses, which includes both share-based compensation expenses and deferred compensation expense or benefit. Main Street believes presenting DNII per share is useful and appropriate supplemental disclosure for analyzing its financial performance since (i) share-based compensation does not require settlement in cash and (ii) deferred compensation expense or benefit does not result in a net cash impact to Main Street upon settlement. However, DNII is a non-U.S. GAAP measure and should not be considered as a replacement for NII or other earnings measures presented in accordance with U.S. GAAP. Instead, DNII should be reviewed only in connection with such U.S. GAAP measures in analyzing Main Street's financial performance. In order to reconcile estimated DNII per share to estimated NII per share in accordance with U.S. GAAP for the third quarter of 2026, an estimated $0.06 to $0.07 per share of non-cash compensation expenses are added back to estimated NII per share to calculate estimated DNII per share.

(2)

DNII before taxes is NII as determined in accordance with U.S. GAAP, excluding the impact of non-cash compensation expenses, which includes both share-based compensation expenses and deferred compensation expense or benefit, and any tax expenses included in NII. Main Street believes presenting DNII before taxes per share is useful and appropriate supplemental disclosure for analyzing its financial performance since (i) share-based compensation does not require settlement in cash, (ii) deferred compensation expense or benefit does not result in a net cash impact to Main Street upon settlement and (iii) tax expenses included in NII may include (a) excise tax expense, which is not solely attributable to NII, and (b) deferred taxes, which are not payable in the current period. However, DNII before taxes is a non-U.S. GAAP measure and should not be considered as a replacement for NII, NII before taxes or other earnings measures presented in accordance with U.S. GAAP. Instead, DNII before taxes should be reviewed only in connection with such U.S. GAAP measures in analyzing Main Street's financial performance. In order to reconcile estimated DNII before taxes per share to estimated NII per share in accordance with U.S. GAAP for the third quarter of 2026, an estimated $0.06 to $0.07 per share of non-cash compensation expenses and an estimated $0.02 per share of NII related tax expenses are added back to estimated NII per share to calculate estimated DNII before taxes per share.
