The launch of Roku's Pro Series TVs represents a strategic move in the highly competitive smart TV market. With features like mini-LED backlighting, a 4K QLED 120Hz panel and Dolby Vision IQ, Roku is positioning its product as a premium offering. The integration of advanced picture quality and audio technology addresses the consumer demand for high-quality home entertainment experiences, which has been growing steadily, particularly in the context of increased content consumption during the pandemic.

The decision to sell through major retailers such as Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart is likely to enhance product accessibility and visibility. However, the price point, ranging from $899.99 to $1699.99, places the Pro Series in direct competition with established brands like Samsung and LG, which have strong footholds in the premium segment. Roku's challenge will be to convince consumers of the value proposition of its TVs against these incumbents.

Roku's incorporation of a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for real-time picture adjustment using AI is indicative of the broader trend towards smarter, more adaptive consumer electronics. This technology, which allows the TV to refine color, contrast and sharpness scene-by-scene, reflects the industry's push towards personalized and automated user experiences. Such features, combined with the Roku operating system's track record, could entice users looking for a seamless and intuitive interface.

The introduction of the Roku Soundstage Audio with side-firing speakers also showcases Roku's commitment to enhancing the audio experience, which is often a secondary consideration for TV manufacturers. This could resonate with consumers who are increasingly interested in creating a theater-like environment at home.

The expansion of the Roku ecosystem with the Pro Series TVs and new features like Backdrops, which transforms the TV into a decorative piece, is an example of how companies are innovating beyond traditional usage. This could appeal to design-conscious consumers and those interested in the aesthetic integration of technology into their living spaces. Additionally, the software update extending Roku Smart Picture to older models demonstrates Roku's commitment to maintaining the value of their products over time, potentially influencing brand loyalty and customer satisfaction.

From a gaming perspective, the inclusion of 120Hz refresh rates and AMD Freesync Premium Pro support indicates Roku's awareness of the growing gaming market and the need for TVs that can double as high-performance gaming monitors. This dual functionality could attract a niche market of console and PC gamers looking for versatile screens.

Combining advanced picture innovations with an elegant design, immersive side-firing audio, a new Voice Remote Pro, and Roku’s #1 selling TV operating system in the U.S.**, the Roku Pro Series TV is the ultimate TV made for streaming.

To make what you’re watching pop off the screen, the Roku Pro Series features mini-LED backlighting for deep blacks and dazzling highlights, with a 4K, QLED, 120Hz panel that produces more than a billion colors along with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision IQ™ to bring content to life. Powering the Pro Series is an all-new flagship processor and upgraded memory architecture, making these TVs the snappiest Roku devices ever. The Pro Series also comes equipped with a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) that allows Roku Smart Picture Max to automatically adjust picture settings. To complete the viewing experience, Roku Soundstage Audio projects sound out and around the viewer through the Pro Series’ new side-firing speakers, for rich spatial effects and deep bass.

“For years, we’ve been invested in making the picture great for the shows and movies you’re watching—and now we’ve added the simplicity of automation,” said Chris Larson, Vice President, Retail Strategy, Roku. “Our Pro Series TVs not only look and sound beautiful; they also give our customers the best possible viewing experience, no matter what they’re watching.”

Picture quality is a key feature for 70% of smart TV viewers when purchasing a TV***. While many TVs come with settings that enhance the picture for content, ranging from sports to movies to animation, only 9% of smart TV viewers often adjust those settings as they watch different types of content, according to a Harris Poll study commissioned by Roku****. To address this, all Roku TV models—even those from a decade ago—will get Roku Smart Picture with an automatic software update.

Created by Roku’s Advanced TV Technology team, Roku Smart Picture uses custom metadata to automatically adjust picture modes before content even starts to play. Thanks to specialized hardware, the Roku Pro Series takes capabilities one step further with Smart Picture Max, which uses AI to refine color, contrast, and sharpness in real-time scene-by-scene.

Pro Series TVs are engineered to make TV simpler and more delightful than ever. The new Roku Voice Remote Pro 2nd edition now includes motion-activated backlit buttons, USB-C charging, and a reimagined shortcut experience to quickly access live TV or a current binge-watch show. Pro Series TVs also come with a dedicated remote finder button on the side of the TV that triggers a chime on the remote.

With the Pro Series, Roku is also introducing Backdrops, a new experience that will soon be available to all Roku TVs and streaming devices, that allows users to transform their TV into a work of art and be part of your home’s decor. Together with the Pro Series’ sleek shadowbox aesthetic and its unique wall mount design, Backdrops makes the TV a beautiful centerpiece for your home.
