"expanded the number of new molecular entities in Phase 3 development"
A new molecular entity (NME) is a drug whose active chemical structure has never before been approved for medical use, like a brand-new recipe for a medicine rather than a variation on an existing one. For investors, NMEs matter because they can represent entirely new product opportunities with patent protection and high potential revenue if they win regulatory approval, but they also carry higher scientific, regulatory and commercial risk compared with known drugs.
phase 3 medical
"new molecular entities in Phase 3 development"
Phase 3 is the late-stage clinical testing step for a new drug or medical treatment, where the product is given to large groups of patients to confirm effectiveness, monitor side effects, and compare it to standard care. Successful Phase 3 results are often the final scientific hurdle before regulators decide on approval and market launch—like passing a final exam before graduation—and can sharply change a company's valuation and future revenue prospects.

Salt Lake City, UT, Nov. 02, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Recursion (Nasdaq: RXRX), a leading clinical-stage company pioneering AI-enabled drug discovery and development, today announced that its Board of Directors has appointed Fred Hassan as Chair, effective October 31, 2026

Mr. Hassan arrives with a strong track record of more than four decades in the pharmaceutical industry. He has grown global businesses and led teams that brought multiple medicines through development, regulatory approval and commercial launch. As an example, the severely challenged Schering-Plough returned to sales growth, strong cash flow, and expanded the number of new molecular entities in Phase 3 development from three to eight.

Mr. Hassan serves as Lead Independent Director of BridgeBio Pharma and was a member of its Board when the company secured FDA approval for the heart failure drug, Attruby and executed a successful launch, substantially ahead of market expectations. He is also Executive Chair of Norstella, the pharmaceutical intelligence company behind Citeline, MMIT and Evaluate. His prior board roles include Amgen, a biotechnology pioneer, and Prometheus Biosciences, which used patient data to develop precision therapies for inflammatory bowel disease. Mr. Hassan also brings experience as an investor. He is a Director and was a Partner and Managing Director at Warburg Pincus.

“Fred has repeatedly built, scaled and transformed some of the most important companies in our industry. His first-hand experience will bring invaluable perspective as we advance from clinical proof of concept through approval and launch - and ultimately to meaningful impact for patients. Our next chapter becomes even more exciting with Fred as Chair. The Board remains deeply grateful to Rob Hershberg for his steady commitment to Recursion, and we’re delighted that we will continue to benefit from his perspective as a physician-scientist and biotech CEO,” said Najat Khan, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Recursion.

“What excites me is the prospect of chairing a Board where its dynamic CEO pairs the courage of striking into the unknown with the unrelenting discipline of turning prioritized projects into innovative medicines,” said Fred Hassan.

“Fred brings proven operating experience, a well-honed investor’s discipline and a track record of repeatedly creating important value through transformation. The Board unanimously believes that he is the right person for the Chair’s role. I welcome Fred and look forward to my continuing role on the Board,” said Dr. Hershberg.
