Key Terms

federal aviation administration regulatory
A U.S. government agency that sets and enforces safety, certification, and operating rules for civil aviation, including aircraft, pilots, airlines, airports, and air traffic control. Think of it as the traffic cop and building inspector for the skies: its approvals, inspections, and regulations can change how quickly new planes or technologies reach the market, alter operating costs, or trigger safety-related grounding or fines, all of which can affect the revenues and stock prices of aviation-related companies.
faa regulatory
The FAA is the U.S. government agency that oversees civil aviation, including aircraft safety, pilot licensing, air traffic control and rules for new technologies like drones. For investors, FAA actions are like a referee’s calls in a game: their approvals, fines or rule changes can directly affect an airline’s operations, a manufacturer’s ability to sell aircraft, or a technology company’s market access and costs, which in turn can change revenue and risk profiles.
supplemental type certificate regulatory
A supplemental type certificate (STC) is an official approval from aviation regulators that allows a change or upgrade to an already certified aircraft or its components, like installing new engines, avionics, or structural modifications. For investors, STCs matter because they create permitted markets for aftermarket parts, upgrades, and maintenance services—similar to a quality stamp that lets a shop legally sell and install a costly retrofit, affecting future revenue, licensing income, and the resale value of aircraft.
latency technical
Latency is the time delay between when information or an instruction is created and when it is received, processed, or acted on by a market system or data feed. For investors, that delay can alter the price you receive, cause missed trading opportunities, or increase execution risk — like sending a text to buy an item and the seller acting a few seconds later after the price has changed.
router technical
A router is a piece of networking equipment that directs data traffic between different computer networks, like a traffic officer guiding cars to the right roads so messages reach the correct destination. For investors, routers matter because they affect how reliably and quickly businesses operate online, influence cybersecurity risk, and represent a product and revenue source for technology suppliers; changes in demand or supply can impact costs, performance, and company valuations.
bandwidth technical
Bandwidth is the amount of capacity—whether people's time and attention, operational resources, or technical network capability—available to handle tasks or growth. Investors care because limited bandwidth can slow execution of strategies, delay product development, or create bottlenecks that affect revenue and costs; thinking of it like the width of a pipe helps: a narrow pipe restricts flow, while a wider one allows more activity to pass through smoothly.
5g technical
5G is the fifth generation of wireless technology that provides faster internet connections, lower latency, and greater capacity than previous networks. It enables quicker downloads, smoother streaming, and more reliable connections for devices. For investors, 5G represents a significant upgrade in technology infrastructure that can drive growth in related industries such as smartphones, smart cities, and the Internet of Things.
