The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.
Services help customers assess how products, building systems and green roofs perform in severe winds.
- More frequent and severe storms are increasing the need for resilient products, buildings and infrastructure.
- New services evaluate products, building systems and green roofs under severe wind conditions.
- Testing can help customers identify design weaknesses, meet applicable requirements and avoid costly delays.

High winds can damage roofs, building materials and infrastructure, increasing the need for resilient design and testing.
High winds can damage roofs, building materials and other products. UL Solutions recreates severe wind conditions in a controlled setting to measure how products and systems perform under pressure. The results can help manufacturers, builders, engineers and architects improve designs, address applicable requirements and reduce delays to market.
Storms are becoming more frequent and severe, placing greater demands on products, buildings and infrastructure, according to research compiled by the American Meteorological Society that examines the frequency and severity of extreme weather events worldwide.*
These growing demands make early testing more important. Testing products during development can reveal weak points before they reach the market, helping customers avoid costly redesigns, reduce waste and support performance claims with test data.
“Severe winds can reveal design weaknesses that are hard to find on paper,” said Emile Tohme, vice president and general manager of the Built Environment group at UL Solutions. “Our testing gives customers data they can use to build stronger products and systems.”
UL Solutions also offers wind testing for green roofs. A green roof contains plants and growing material and can help insulate a building, manage rainwater and support sustainability goals.
Strong winds, however, can move plants, remove growing material or damage the roof system. UL Solutions’ service tests green roof assemblies to CSA A123.24, the Standard Test Method for Wind Resistance of Vegetated Roof Assemblies, in which fans can reach up to 180 mph, which is similar to the wind speeds in a Category 5 hurricane. UL Solutions worked with the National Research Council of
“Our goal is simple: Help customers understand how their designs may perform before severe weather puts them to the test,” Tohme said.
