Westlake Corporation Reports Third Quarter 2026 Results
Adjusted earnings improved year over year but fell sequentially as selling prices and housing-related volumes weakened.
Sentiment and the balance of points
Rhea-AI Sentiment reads the wording of the document, how positive or negative its language is on a 1 to 5 scale. The balance of points shown with the takes weighs what the document actually discloses, so the two can disagree, for example when a trial that missed its main goal is described in upbeat language.
Rhea-AI Summary
Westlake (NYSE: WLK) reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $6 million, returning to profit from a year-earlier loss. Sales were $2.981 billion, versus $2.838 billion a year earlier and $3.271 billion in the second quarter. Diluted earnings were $0.05 per share, versus a $6.06 loss a year earlier and $2.01 earned sequentially.
Excluding identified items, net income was $58 million and EBITDA—earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization—was $408 million, versus $313 million a year earlier and $679 million sequentially. Facility shutdown and other restructuring charges totaled $58 million. Housing and Infrastructure Products faced lower volumes and higher distribution costs; Performance and Essential Materials faced lower sequential prices and higher European energy costs. Free cash flow was $220 million. Westlake said its profitability plan remains on track for $600 million of EBITDA uplift in 2026.
How this balance works
Rhea-AI gives every point it takes from this document a weight. Minor counts 1, Moderate 3 and Major 9, so one Major point outweighs several Minor ones. The bar adds up the weights on each side, and when neither side holds more than 65% of the total the balance reads Mixed.
It reads the document as published, with the same rules for every company, and it does not look at what the market expected or at how the stock traded, so a point can be objectively good on a day the stock falls.
Rhea-AI Sentiment measures something else, the tone of the wording.

BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS
Westlake reported third quarter of 2026 net sales of
Compared to the third quarter of 2025, the Company's average sales price increased
Compared to the second quarter of 2026, the Company's average sales price declined
Financial conditions for the European chemical industry meaningfully deteriorated during the third quarter of 2026 due to significantly higher energy costs, weak demand, and increasing imports. Taking into consideration the structural challenges in Europe, the Company is taking action to optimize its European chlorovinyls footprint by integrating its globally-advantaged North American chlorovinyls assets with the recently-acquired vinyls facility in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, and removing higher-cost capacity from its system with the announced closure of its PVC plant in Cologne, Germany.
EXECUTIVE COMMENTARY
"Our third quarter of 2026 financial results reflected lower levels of North American residential construction activity and customer inventory destocking in our HIP segment combined with lower selling prices and margins in our PEM segment as initial price increases realized in the second quarter of 2026 following the onset of the Middle East conflict moderated. Earnings in PEM's European businesses were significantly impacted by higher energy costs, weak demand, and increased import pressure from Asia. In response to these structural challenges in Europe, we took action to optimize our footprint in the third quarter by announcing the closure of a PVC plant in Cologne, Germany. HIP's third quarter margins were also impacted by higher diesel and freight costs. Despite these headwinds, Westlake generated
"Higher borrowing costs have increased potential homebuyers' affordability concerns, which we expect to weigh on HIP's near-term sales volumes. Nevertheless, we remain positive on the medium- to long-term outlook for HIP sales and earnings growth supported by our investments in growth segments of the market and infrastructure spending. While PEM selling prices have stabilized with upward momentum entering the fourth quarter of 2026, we recognize that an environment of heightened price volatility persists, which requires us to stay vigilant in identifying and executing cost reduction and footprint optimization actions," Mr. Gilson concluded.

Use of Non-GAAP Financial Measures
This release makes reference to certain "non-GAAP" financial measures, such as EBITDA, free cash flow and other measures that exclude the effects of the Identified Items, as defined in Regulation G of the U.S. Securities Exchange Act of 1934, as amended. For this purpose, a non-GAAP financial measure is generally defined by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a numerical measure of a registrant's historical or future financial performance, financial position or cash flows that (1) excludes amounts, or is subject to adjustments that have the effect of excluding amounts, that are included in the most directly comparable measure calculated and presented in accordance with GAAP in the statement of operations, balance sheet or statement of cash flows (or equivalent statements) of the registrant; or (2) includes amounts, or is subject to adjustments that have the effect of including amounts, that are excluded from the most directly comparable measure so calculated and presented. We report our financial results in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (U.S. GAAP), but believe that certain non-GAAP financial measures, such as EBITDA, free cash flow and measures that exclude the effects of the Identified Items, provide useful supplemental information to investors regarding the underlying business trends and performance of the Company's ongoing operations and are useful for period-over-period comparisons of such operations. These non-GAAP financial measures should be considered as a supplement to, and not as a substitute for or superior to, the financial measures prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP. A reconciliation of (i) net income (loss), income (loss) from operations and net cash provided by operating activities to EBITDA, and (ii) net cash provided by operating activities to free cash flow and (iii) other measures reflecting adjustments for the effects of the Identified Items can be found in the financial schedules at the end of this press release.
