Rhea-AI Filing Summary

Emergent BioSolutions Inc. received a modification exercising an option period under its existing delivery order, valued at up to $22.3 million, to supply BioThrax (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) to the U.S. Department of War. The first delivery is valued at approximately $7.4 million and will begin this year; remaining deliveries are expected in 2027.

The order is under Emergent’s existing indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract, led by the Portfolio Management Executive for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense in collaboration with the Defense Health Agency. It supplies BioThrax for use by all branches of the U.S. military as pre-exposure prophylaxis against anthrax. In August 2026, Emergent received a separate modification valued at approximately $24 million to supply CYFENDUS to BARDA for anthrax preparedness.

BioThrax is indicated for active immunization to prevent disease caused by Bacillus anthracis in people 18 through 65 years of age and is approved for pre-exposure prophylaxis for people at high risk. Severe allergic reaction after a previous dose or to a vaccine component is a contraindication; use during pregnancy should be avoided unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential fetal risk.

indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract technical
"existing indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract"
An indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract is a purchasing agreement that lets a buyer order unspecified quantities of goods or services over a set period without committing to exact amounts up front. Think of it like a standing grocery account where a store agrees to supply whatever is needed, when needed, up to a ceiling amount. For investors, IDIQs matter because they create predictable revenue streams, reduce sales volatility, and can signal long-term customer relationships or government demand that supports a company's future cash flow.
pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medical
"as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for anthrax disease"
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medical prevention strategy in which an otherwise healthy person takes a medicine—typically a daily pill or periodic injection—before possible exposure to an infectious disease to greatly reduce the chance of becoming infected. For investors, PrEP matters because its regulatory approvals, pricing, delivery format, patent protection and uptake determine market size, recurring revenue potential and competitive dynamics in the preventative-treatment market—think of it like a seatbelt product that people buy to avoid rare but severe outcomes.
post-exposure prophylaxis medical
"post-exposure prophylaxis of disease"
A short course of medication or treatment given immediately after someone may have been exposed to an infectious agent to stop the infection from taking hold. Like applying a firewall after a suspected hacking attempt, it’s intended to prevent a small risk from becoming a full-blown problem. For investors, post-exposure prophylaxis matters because demand can spike suddenly after exposure events, regulatory approvals and efficacy data drive sales and valuation, and timely access or shortages affect market opportunity and reputational risk for healthcare providers and drug makers.
Bacillus anthracis medical
"disease caused by Bacillus anthracis"
A bacterium that causes anthrax, capable of infecting humans and animals through spores that can survive in soil for long periods; think of it like a tiny, hardy seed that can lie dormant and later grow into a dangerous infection. It matters to investors because outbreaks, biodefense concerns, vaccine and drug development, regulatory controls, and related supply-chain or insurance impacts can affect the valuation and risk profile of companies in healthcare, agriculture, and security sectors.

Emergent BioSolutions Receives $22.3 Million Delivery Order Modification to Supply BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) to the U.S. Department of War

GAITHERSBURG, Md., Nov. 04, 2026 (BUSINESSWIRE) -- Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (NYSE: EBS) today announced that it has received a modification exercising an option period under its existing delivery order valued at up to $22.3 million to supply BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) to the U.S. Department of War (DoW). The first delivery, which is valued at approximately $7.4 million, will begin this year, and remaining deliveries are expected in 2027.

This order is under Emergent’s existing indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract (W911SR24D0001), led by the Portfolio Management Executive for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (PME CBRND) in collaboration with the Defense Health Agency to supply BioThrax® for use by all branches of the U.S. military as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for anthrax disease. Anthrax remains a significant biological threat due to its potential use in a bioterrorism event and its implications for national security.

“We’re pleased to continue supporting the Department of War’s efforts to maintain preparedness against critical biological threats like anthrax,” said Paul Williams, senior vice president, head of products business, global government and public affairs at Emergent. “Delivering dependable access to BioThrax® helps protect our nation’s service members who have an elevated risk of anthrax exposure.”

This award builds on Emergent’s work with the U.S. government to support anthrax preparedness. In August 2026, Emergent received a contract modification valued at approximately $24 million to supply CYFENDUS® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed, Adjuvanted) to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) for anthrax preparedness efforts.

About BioThrax® (Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed) BioThrax® vaccine is indicated for the active immunization for the prevention of disease caused by Bacillus anthracis in persons 18 through 65 years of age. BioThrax® is approved for (1) pre-exposure prophylaxis of disease in persons at high risk of exposure; and (2) post-exposure prophylaxis of disease following suspected or confirmed Bacillus anthracis exposure, when administered in conjunction with recommended antibacterial drugs. The efficacy of BioThrax® for post-exposure prophylaxis is based solely on studies in animal models of inhalational anthrax.
