Insights

Volatility-targeted leveraged exposure with explicit operational limits.

The supplement explains the index applies a dynamic leverage factor targeting realized volatility of the S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index plus 10%, subject to a floor of 100% and a cap of 200%. The leverage factor is based on a realized-volatility measurement with a two-index-day lag.

The primary dependencies are futures-roll behavior (negative roll yield), the accuracy of realized-volatility measurement, and the sponsor’s calculations. The supplement discloses hypothetical pre-launch data and Bloomberg-sourced historical levels through May 1, 2026; timing and cash-flow treatment for any securities linked to the index are not detailed here.

Document lists concentrated product and counterparty risks.

The supplement enumerates risks including credit exposure to GS Finance Corp. and The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., negative roll yields from futures, potential divergence from the underlying index, and limited operating history since the April 25, 2022 launch. It also cautions that realized volatility of the index may not equal the targeted spread above the underlying due to calculation lag.

Investors should note the supplement’s repeated statement that hypothetical and historical returns are not predictive; any market value of securities linked to this index will reflect these risks.

S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index financial

Realized volatility is a backward-looking measure of how much an asset’s price actually moved over a past period, usually expressed as the typical size of its day-to-day swings. Investors use it as a factual gauge of historical risk—like checking how bumpy a road has been—to judge whether current prices, risk limits, or trading strategies match real market behavior and to spot when expectations about future swings may be too high or low.
leverage factor lag technical
"there is a lag of two index calculation days between the measurement of realized volatility and the calculation of the leverage factor"

Index Volatility Spread

The following graph shows the percentage difference in the annualized volatility of the index compared to the S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index from January 4, 2021 through May 1, 2026 (using hypothetical performance data and historical closing levels, as described above). In the graph, historical annualized volatility can be found to the right of the vertical solid line marker. For each day, annualized volatility is a measure of the historical variability of returns, and is calculated as the square root of 252 multiplied by the sample standard deviation of the daily logarithmic returns of the index during a 60 business day look-back period. The index is intended to provide investors with leveraged exposure to the S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index based on a dynamic volatility target. The dynamic volatility target is the applicable realized volatility of the S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index plus 10%. However, because of how the leverage factor is calculated, there is a lag of two index calculation days between the measurement of realized volatility of the S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index and the calculation of the leverage factor. Therefore, the index will not reflect the most current volatility of the S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index and the realized volatility of the index will not always be exactly 10% higher than the realized volatility of the S&P 500® Futures Excess Return Index. You should not take the hypothetical or historical annualized volatility of the indices as an indication of the future performance of any index, including the S&P 500® Futures Volatility Plus Daily Risk Control Index.
