less-than-truckload technical
"reported certain less-than-truckload (“LTL”) operating metrics for August 2026"
Less-than-truckload (LTL) is a freight shipping method where multiple customers share space on the same truck because each shipment is too small to fill a full truck. Like taking a shared taxi instead of hiring a car for just yourself, LTL can lower shipping costs and improve flexibility but adds handling steps and transit stops, so it matters to investors because it affects companies’ delivery speed, logistics costs, inventory timing and overall profit margins.
LTL revenue per hundredweight financial
"due to an increase in our LTL revenue per hundredweight that was partially"
LTL revenue per hundredweight measures how much a carrier earns, on average, for every 100 pounds of less‑than‑truckload (LTL) freight hauled. Think of it as the price a shipping company charges per small bundle of cargo—similar to how a taxi measures fare per mile—so changes show whether the company is getting paid more or less for moving the same amount of goods, which affects margins and revenue trends that investors watch.
fuel surcharges financial
"LTL revenue per hundredweight, excluding fuel surcharges, increased 11.3% and 4.8%"
Fuel surcharges are extra fees that transport, shipping, and travel companies add to bills to cover rises in fuel costs; they act like a temporary add-on to regular prices when energy becomes more expensive. Investors watch them because surcharges can protect a company’s profit margin when fuel prices climb but may also reduce demand or complicate revenue comparisons, so changes in surcharges affect cash flow, margins and forecasting.

OLD DOMINION FREIGHT LINE PROVIDES UPDATE FOR Third QUARTER 2026

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – (September 3, 2026) – Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. (Nasdaq: ODFL) today reported certain less-than-truckload (“LTL”) operating metrics for August 2026. Revenue per day increased 12.4% as compared to August 2025 due to an increase in our LTL revenue per hundredweight that was partially offset by a 0.9% decrease in LTL tons per day. The change in LTL tons per day was attributable to a 2.4% decrease in LTL shipments per day that was partially offset by a 1.7% increase in LTL weight per shipment. For the quarter-to-date period, LTL revenue per hundredweight and LTL revenue per hundredweight, excluding fuel surcharges, increased 11.3% and 4.8%, respectively, as compared to the same period last year.

Marty Freeman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Old Dominion, commented, “Old Dominion produced solid revenue growth for July and August, with underlying demand trends remaining relatively consistent as the quarter has progressed. In addition, the strength and consistency of our industry-leading service continue to support the ongoing improvement in our LTL revenue per hundredweight. Our value proposition remains best-in-class, and we have all the necessary elements of capacity in place to support volume growth as the business environment evolves. As a result, we remain confident that through the continued execution of our long-term strategic plan, we are well positioned to win profitable market share and increase shareholder value over the long term.”
